Anibal Sanchez signed a two-year, $19 million with the Washington Nationals in December of 2018. The incentive-laden contract includes a $12 million option for a third year.
The Venezuelan native began his major league career in 2006 with the Florida Marlins. Sanchez pitched a no-hitter his rookie season and finished the year with a 10-3 record.
His fortunes fell after that, ending up with the Detroit Tigers in 2012. The right-hander had his best season in 2013, leading the American League with a 2.57 ERA, posting 14 wins for the Tigers and finishing fourth in the Cy Young Award voting.
After that, he hit another dry patch, a very poor 2017 (6.41 ERA) ending his time in Detroit. Joining the Atlanta Braves in 2018, Sanchez enjoyed a rebound season, closing out the year with a 7-6 record and an impressive 2.83 ERA.
Assuming Sanchez doesn't revert to form and follow a strong year with a weak one, the Nationals will rely on the Venezuelan right-hander to provide a reliable arm in the fourth spot of a very strong starting rotation.
