#22 SMU Cruises To A 51-37 Win Over Navy

The team of Shane Buechele and Ulysses Bentley IV proved to be too much for Navy ( 3-4, 3-2 AAC) on Saturday night. Buechele finished 23-28 for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns while Bentley rushed 25 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 6 passes for 68 yards including a 61 yard strike.

The Navy defense came into the game without starting cornerback Mikey McMorris (concussion) lost Caleb Clear and Diego Fagot during the game to injuries. SMU (6-1, 3-1 AAC) scored on 8 straight possessions.

The only field goal came as time expired in the first half. Navy fumbled as they tried to run out the clock. The officials said there was a second left allowing SMU to kick a 35 yard field goal.

Dalen Morris looked better running the Navy offense. Offensive coordinator Ivan Jasper gave Morris the chance to pitch the ball quickly instead of running to the edge where he had been struggling in his decision making. He also passed for 116 yards but missed a few open receivers.

Tyger Goslin started the 4th quarter and led the Midshipmen to three touchdowns in garbage time to make the score look better. SMU had 12 tackles for a loss which didn’t help matters. SMU ended up with 555 yards of total offense. They were also 7-11 on third down.

It gets no easier for Navy as Tulsa comes to town next Saturday for a noon kickoff. The Golden Hurricane beat East Carolina 34-30 last night. They are 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the AAC. The Brigade of Midshipmen will be in attendance for the contest.
