Orioles Select Colton Coswer 5th Overall

Last night in the 2021 MLB draft the Orioles went with another outfielder in Colton Cowser out of Sam Houston St University. Cowser came into the draft as the number 10 prospect in this years draft. So what do the Orioles get with a guy like Coswer? He’s a guy who has done nothing but get better over his college career and a guy who can be a difference maker in a lineup. The Orioles have a plethora of young outfield talent and the Orioles will have to reload over time to make sure they are stocked at that position. The goal now for Elias and Co. is to make sure that Cowser is ready to play at the highest level and be ready when he gets called up.

Whether or not Coswer can be an everyday center fielder, which the Orioles don’t necessarily need with Mullins on the roster is still to be determined. He could be a valuable piece at a corner outfielder spot, which the Orioles could find him useful for. Scouts and stats say that his hitting is the strongest aspect of his game as he hit .361 as a freshman and finished his career hitting .374 with 16 homeruns to his credit. As a hitter he should enjoy playing at a place like Camden when he can make the jump. He has a nice stroke and is able to find the barrel, which allows him to hit to all different parts of the park. His power and hitting should allow for him to hit an average of 20 homers a year. Which should add some bite to an Orioles offense that is loaded with with pretty good hitters.

I was a little confused by the pick at first, but the more I look at Cowser and the scouting reports the more I like what I see. The guy is a natural hitter who can put the ball in play and be a reliable weapon for the Orioles for years to come. It should be interesting to see him grow and develop and make an impact on the Orioles organization. The rest of the draft for the Orioles should be very interesting as well and will have details and updates on that at a later date.
