Ravens place Jimmy Smith on injured reserve

The Baltimore Ravens have placed cornerback Jimmy Smith on injured reserve and have signed Rashaan Melvin off the Miami Dolphins practice squad.  This transaction comes days after the Ravens announced that Smith had foot surgery.

Smith was originally going to be out only a few weeks but there was more damage in Smith’s foot than orginally thought.  Losing Smith is a huge blow to the Ravens as he was their best player in the secondary.  Smith is a shutdown cornerback and was having a dominate season.  The Ravens recently shook up their secondary after giving up six touchdown passes to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Ravens do not have a player that can replace Smith but playing as a team and communication should help.  The safety position should be improving with the addition of Will Hill but the corners are still lacking.
