MSB High School Lacrosse: Mount St. Joseph Gaels 2026 Season Recap

The 2026 Mount St. Joseph Gaels men’s lacrosse team battled through one of the toughest schedules in the country while competing in the brutal Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) A Conference. By season’s end, the Gaels finished with a 10-8 overall record, scoring 187 goals while allowing 157. The program ranked among Maryland’s top teams and remained competitive against nationally recognized opponents throughout the spring.

For Mount St. Joseph, the season represented another step forward under head coach Tyler Reid. The Gaels continued to establish themselves as a program capable of developing Division I talent while competing weekly against schools such as McDonogh School, Calvert Hall College High School, Loyola Blakefield, Gilman School, and Severn School.

The Gaels were rarely out of games. Several contests were decided by a single goal, showing both the competitiveness of the roster and the razor-thin margins that define MIAA A Conference lacrosse.

Season Overview

Mount St. Joseph entered the season with significant expectations. The Gaels had a roster loaded with experienced upperclassmen and several college commits. Their schedule featured a combination of elite Maryland programs, national competition, and conference rivals.

The team opened the year with a strong stretch of nonconference play.

Early-Season Results

  • Defeated Westtown 17-6
  • Defeated St. Mary’s Ryken 14-8
  • Defeated Kiski School 10-7
  • Defeated Good Counsel 12-10
  • Defeated Foothill (California) 13-5

Those victories helped establish momentum before conference play intensified. The Gaels displayed offensive balance while generating strong defensive performances against quality opponents.

Navigating the MIAA A Conference

There is no tougher high school lacrosse conference in America than the MIAA A.

Every week brings nationally ranked opponents, Division I recruits, and playoff-level intensity.

Mount St. Joseph’s conference slate included matchups against:

  • Calvert Hall
  • Gilman
  • McDonogh
  • Loyola Blakefield
  • Severn
  • St. Paul’s
  • John Carroll

The Gaels showed they belonged.

A 7-6 victory over Gilman stood out as one of the season’s signature wins. Mount St. Joseph’s defense played outstanding lacrosse, limiting one of the conference’s better offenses while controlling possession late in the game.

Another highlight came in a 12-5 victory over John Carroll. The Gaels controlled the contest from the opening faceoff and produced one of their most complete performances of the season.

An 8-7 victory over St. Paul’s further demonstrated the team’s ability to win close games. One-goal contests often determine playoff positioning in the MIAA, and the Gaels repeatedly showed resilience.

Offensive Production

Mount St. Joseph finished the season with 187 goals in 18 games.

That works out to more than 10 goals per game against one of the nation’s toughest schedules.

The offensive philosophy centered on ball movement, unselfish play, and attacking from multiple positions.

Unlike some teams that rely heavily on one superstar scorer, the Gaels featured contributions throughout the lineup.

Several midfielders could dodge from up top.

Attackmen created opportunities behind the cage.

Faceoff specialists helped generate additional possessions.

The result was a balanced offense capable of producing goals in transition, settled situations, and man-up opportunities.

The team’s offensive success was particularly impressive considering the quality of opposing defenses.

Week after week, Mount St. Joseph faced future Division I defenders and goalkeepers.

Despite that challenge, the Gaels still averaged double-digit scoring.

Defensive Identity

The defense often set the tone.

Allowing 157 goals across 18 games means the Gaels surrendered approximately 8.7 goals per contest against elite competition.

The defense emphasized:

  • Physical on-ball play
  • Smart slide packages
  • Communication
  • Clearing efficiency
  • Ground-ball battles

Several close defenders consistently matched up against Division I-caliber attackmen.

The defensive unit also excelled at forcing difficult shooting angles and limiting second-chance opportunities.

In a conference where many teams average double-digit goals, keeping opponents below nine goals per game is a significant accomplishment.

The Importance of Ground Balls

One statistic that rarely receives enough attention is ground balls.

Winning ground balls often determines possession.

Possession determines scoring opportunities.

The Gaels consistently competed in this area.

Throughout the season, Mount St. Joseph demonstrated a willingness to win loose-ball battles between the restraining lines.

Long-stick midfielders and defensive midfielders played major roles in creating transition opportunities.

Many of the team’s best offensive runs originated from defensive stops followed by successful clears.

Key Players and Standout Contributors

While comprehensive public statistics for every player are not available, several athletes emerged as major contributors and college prospects.

Tyler Appenzeller – Midfield

Appenzeller entered the season as one of the program’s most highly regarded prospects.

The Monmouth commit served as a key two-way midfielder capable of impacting games offensively and defensively.

His athleticism allowed him to:

  • Initiate offense
  • Defend opposing midfielders
  • Push transition
  • Win ground balls

Appenzeller’s versatility made him one of the most important pieces on the roster.

Nico Dinisio – LSM

One of the most exciting young players in the program, Dinisio emerged as a difference-maker from the long-stick midfield position.

The Bucknell commit showcased:

  • Elite stick skills
  • Transition ability
  • Defensive instincts
  • Ground-ball production

Long-stick midfielders often change games without appearing prominently on the score sheet.

Dinisio did exactly that throughout the season.

Carson Rakes – Defense

Rakes anchored portions of the defensive unit and brought physicality to the back end.

The Anderson University commit developed into a dependable defender capable of handling difficult assignments against top attackmen.

His positioning and communication helped stabilize the defense during conference play.

Cole Fuhrman – Goalkeeper

Strong goalie play is essential in the MIAA A Conference.

Fuhrman provided exactly that.

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland commit delivered important saves throughout the season and helped keep the Gaels competitive in several one-goal games.

His performance against elite shooters allowed Mount St. Joseph to remain in contention against nationally ranked opponents.

Jack Birrane – Midfield

Birrane added depth and versatility to the midfield group.

The Lynchburg commit brought energy and production whenever called upon and helped create matchup problems for opposing defenses.
