Caps preseason game one in the books, game two Wednesday night

Washington Capitals Jakub Vrana will make his preseason debut in Montreal tonight. He will join a first line consisting of stars Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov. It’s nice work if you can get it.

With the offseason departures of forwards Justin Williams (Carolina) and Marcus Johansson (New Jersey), Vrana, 21, is auditioning for a spot among Washington’s top-six forwards and on the power play.

The 2014 first-round pick is also one of several Capitals prospects trying to stick in the NHL.

After watching former Hershey Bear team mate and Australian Nathan Walker have a strong camp, along with scoring the only goal against the Devils on Monday night, Vrana has big shoes to fill heading into this game.

In multiple recalls from AHL Hershey last season, Vrana had three goals and three assists in 21 games with the Caps. Inconsistency and defensive deficiencies at both levels were his biggest stuggles.

Defensive prospects Christian Djoos and Madison Bowey are in the running for spots on Washington’s blue line, which lost three regulars in the offseason, including veteran Karl Alzner and Nate Schmidt.

Man what a fun time it is to be a Washington Capitals, or Hershey Bears fan.

Philipp Grubauer and Pheonix Copley will handle the goaltending chores in Wednesdays tilt with the Habs.
