Capitals Add Veteran Depth on Blue Line, Sign Jacob MacDonald to Two-Way Contract

The Washington Capitals continued to strengthen their organizational depth Sunday, signing veteran defenseman Jacob MacDonald to a one-year, two-way contract worth $850,000 at the NHL level and $525,000 in the AHL. The move is another indication that Washington wants experienced players ready to step into the lineup if injuries strike while also bolstering the defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears.

At 33 years old, MacDonald brings nearly a decade of professional experience and has proven to be one of the American Hockey League’s most productive offensive defensemen. While he will compete for a roster spot in training camp, expectations are that he will begin the 2026-27 season with Hershey and serve as one of the organization’s first call-up options.

One of the AHL’s Best Offensive Defensemen

MacDonald is coming off an outstanding season with the Colorado Eagles, where he cemented his reputation as one of the league’s elite blueliners.

2025-26 Regular Season (AHL)

  • 17 games
  • 4 goals
  • 8 assists
  • 12 points

2025 Calder Cup Playoffs

  • 17 games
  • 1 goal
  • 1 assist
  • 2 points

The previous season was even more impressive. In 2024-25, MacDonald scored 31 goals and 55 points, setting a new AHL single-season record for goals by a defenseman while earning the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Defenseman and First Team All-Star honors.

NHL Experience

Although known primarily for his AHL production, MacDonald has appeared in well over 100 NHL games during his career with the Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, and San Jose Sharks.

His NHL résumé includes:

  • Over 100 NHL games played
  • More than 10 NHL goals
  • Experience on both special teams
  • Ability to play in multiple defensive pairings
  • Strong skating and offensive instincts from the blue line

That versatility makes him an ideal organizational depth player.

What This Means for the Capitals

Washington has made several depth additions this offseason after reshaping its roster. MacDonald likely slots behind the Capitals’ established NHL defensemen but gives the organization a veteran who can step into the lineup on short notice.

Just as importantly, his addition gives the Hershey Bears another experienced leader as they look to remain among the AHL’s elite teams. His offensive ability should also help replace some of the production lost through offseason departures.

Given his age and experience, MacDonald will probably spend most of the season in Hershey, but if injuries hit Washington’s blue line, he has the experience to provide reliable NHL minutes.

MSB Take

This is the type of signing successful organizations make every summer.

MacDonald isn’t expected to play 82 NHL games, but he provides outstanding insurance. Few organizations have a defenseman in the minors with his combination of NHL experience, offensive production, and leadership.

For Hershey, this is a significant addition. MacDonald should immediately become one of the Bears’ top defensemen and could quarterback the power play while mentoring younger prospects.

Washington continues to build quality depth throughout the organization, and Jacob MacDonald fits that strategy perfectly. He may spend most of the year wearing a Hershey Bears sweater, but don’t be surprised if Capitals fans see him at Capital One Arena whenever injuries create an opportunity.
