Between Rounds: Jon “Bones” Jones

I’m sure everyone expects this article to start off with some reference to the darker past of Jon Jones. Well you have about a picograms chance of that being the story I chose to tell. That horse has been beaten to death and it’s time we talk about the beatings that “Bones” has delivered to every UFC fighter he has ever stepped into the cage with. Time we talk about the man most of you never see and know nothing about. No, I don’t personally know “Bones” however we do share a close mutual friend and I will take you inside the Champs camp and open some doors many have never even knocked on.

Jonathan Dwight Jones better known to fight fans as “Bones” a nickname his coaches gave him in his football days as a slim defensive lineman. Jon was a standout wrestler in high school and won a state championship at Union-Endicott High School in upstate New York. Jon also won a national JUCO championship at Iowa Central Community College, Both of Jones brothers made a name and a living playing professional football. Arthur, the elder was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010 and played 8 years in the league highlighted by the Ravens Super Bowl victory. Chandler is the younger brother to Jon but hardly the little brother. Chandler 6’5″ 265 pounds was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round in 2012 and is still a ferocious player in the league. Appears the Jones family has been kicking ass and taking names for years and they all know about being a champion.

Our mutual friend Cody Keith is an MMA enthusiast and longtime Jones fan and friend. Cody is quick with his feet and his hands but more importantly he is quick to down play the external noise that comes with Jon. Cody is genuine when he talks about the champ and points out how generous the man is and how he treats his fans. “It’s the law of attraction with him we just clicked the first time we met. He spent so much time with his fans taking pictures and shaking hands but what really stood out is how he always wanted to ask how the fans were doing and what was going on in their lives” Cody stated. When I asked him to share a “Bones” story he lit up like a kid at Christmas. ” At UFC 214 Jon didn’t have an open workout but he came out anyway and took pics with every fan that attended the event. Wasn’t because he was required to but because he wanted to. He loves the fans and goes out his way to try and make their day” Cody said with a smile. I asked Cody to tell me what he finds as the best qualities about Jon. “First and foremost he is a family man. He never gives up no matter how hard life comes at him. He believes in the power of the mind and accomplishing anything he sets his mind to do.” Cody exclaimed. Jon Jones will never outrun the cloud that pursues him but that’s okay cause the man isn’t hard wired to run. Jon will stand and face what comes, he will fight and he will win and you can all quote me on that.

Jones has never lost a fight in the UFC. Yes, his record shows a loss to Matt Hamill in 2009 but Jon was disqualified for illegal elbows he wasn’t beaten by Hamill. Dominating his opponents is all he knows with a record of 23-1 and Hamill his only blemish “Bones” knows no defeat in the cage. Defeating some of the greatest fighters in UFC history along the way Jones is hands down the best fighter to ever step foot in the cage. Ryan Bader, Loyota Machida, Rampage Jackson, Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort just to name a few of his notable wins. Twice beating Alexander Gustafsson and Daniel Cormier the current UFC heavyweight champion of the world. Standing 6’4″ and weighing in at 204 pounds I don’t see any man ready to dethrone the true kind of the cage. I know all about his past and the issues that come with it and you know what, Jon knows too. Jones mentality remains the same stand and fight and when the door opens one the one man to walk away a winner. Jones doesn’t hide the fact he has made mistakes nor does he expect everyone to believe in him or support him. That’s okay cause at the end of the day he will stand and take a pic with you anyway. That is just who Jon Jones is my friends.

Saturday night at UFC 235 Jones will defend his title against Anthony Smith. Smith a young hungry fighter has had a lot to say as of late. Anthony was quoted as saying Jones is a great martial artist but that I’m the far better fighter. All Jon has done through his career is fight. From his opponents to the media to the UFC and USADA everyday is a fight for Jon and he welcomes that. Anthony Smith pack your lunch on Saturday kid cause it’s gonna be long night for you. Keeping talking that talk and be ready when “Bones” shows you how to walk that walk. You got about a picogram’s chance of taking that title from Jon Jones buster.
