Orioles Reinstate Samuel Basallo From Injured List, Option Jeremiah Jackson to Norfolk

The Baltimore Orioles are getting one of their most important young hitters back.

Baltimore announced Wednesday that catcher Samuel Basallo has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list, while infielder/outfielder Jeremiah Jackson has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk in the corresponding roster move.

Basallo had been sidelined since late July with right shoulder inflammation, an injury that interrupted what had been a promising first full season in the majors. When Baltimore placed him on the injured list, Basallo was hitting .241 with 16 home runs and 46 RBIs in 86 games.

His return gives the Orioles another significant left-handed bat and restores an important piece of their catching and designated hitter rotation.

Basallo returns after shoulder injury

Basallo originally left Baltimore’s July 19 game against the Houston Astros after experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder. The Orioles placed him on the 10-day injured list three days later, retroactive to July 20.

The injury became even more significant because Baltimore was already navigating health issues elsewhere at catcher.

Basallo eventually progressed to baseball activities, including hitting off a tee, underhand tosses, throwing work and other rehabilitation exercises. MASN reported last week that the shoulder inflammation had improved enough for Basallo to resume those activities.

Now he is ready to return to the major league roster.

According to Baseball Reference, Basallo enters his return with a .241 average, 16 home runs and 68 hits in 282 at-bats this season.

Those numbers are especially encouraging considering Basallo is only 22 and is still establishing himself at the major league level.

At 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Basallo brings legitimate power to the middle of Baltimore’s lineup while also giving the Orioles flexibility behind the plate and at designated hitter.

Orioles regain an important offensive weapon

Basallo’s return could be especially valuable for an Orioles offense that has experienced stretches of inconsistency.

Baltimore entered Wednesday following a 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees in which the Orioles managed only five hits and went hitless with runners in scoring position. Coby Mayo’s solo home run accounted for Baltimore’s only run.

Adding Basallo gives manager Craig Albernaz another dangerous left-handed option.

The young catcher had already demonstrated that he could impact games with his power before the injury. Sixteen home runs through 86 games put him on pace for a strong rookie campaign before the shoulder issue temporarily stopped his momentum.

Baltimore can now mix Basallo into a lineup that includes Gunnar Henderson, Pete Alonso, Jackson Holliday, Coby Mayo and several other power threats.

His return also gives the Orioles more flexibility with Carlos Narváez and Yohel Pozo currently listed among the club’s catching options.

The Orioles will have to determine how frequently they want Basallo catching immediately after a shoulder injury, but having his bat available alone provides a meaningful upgrade.

Jeremiah Jackson optioned to Norfolk

To create room for Basallo on the active roster, Baltimore optioned Jeremiah Jackson to Triple-A Norfolk.

Jackson has been valuable because of his versatility, appearing at multiple positions and giving the Orioles a right-handed bat capable of contributing off the bench or in the starting lineup.

He has also bounced between Baltimore and Norfolk this season.

The Orioles previously optioned Jackson on June 28 before recalling him on July 3.

Jackson has produced some memorable moments in 2026, including a grand slam against Arizona on April 13 and a go-ahead two-run double against the Chicago Cubs on July 9.

Baseball Reference lists Jackson with a .252 average, seven home runs and 53 hits this season.

His demotion appears to be more about roster construction than a complete reflection of his performance.

With Basallo healthy again, Baltimore needed to open an active roster spot, and Jackson still has the ability to be optioned.

That makes him one of the easier roster moves for the Orioles to make while preserving other players who might not have the same flexibility.

Basallo remains a major part of Baltimore’s future

While the Orioles’ 2026 season has included significant roster turnover, Basallo remains one of the organization’s most important young players.

He entered the year as one of Baltimore’s top prospects and has already shown why the organization has viewed him as a potential cornerstone.

His combination of size, left-handed power and offensive upside gives Baltimore another young middle-of-the-order bat who could potentially become a major part of the lineup for years.

The biggest question going forward will be how the Orioles balance Basallo’s catching responsibilities with keeping his bat in the lineup.

Baltimore has several players who can occupy the designated hitter spot, and Pete Alonso remains entrenched at first base. That means Basallo’s ability to catch consistently could significantly increase the number of at-bats available to him.

For now, however, simply getting him healthy and back into the lineup is the priority.

MSB Take

Getting Samuel Basallo back is one of the better developments the Orioles have had in recent weeks.

Baltimore needs to continue finding out which young players will be part of the team’s long-term core, and Basallo has already shown enough power to make him one of the most interesting players on the roster.

The shoulder injury was concerning because of his position. Catchers put significant stress on their throwing arm, so Baltimore should not have any reason to rush his workload behind the plate.

But his bat needs to be in the lineup.

Sixteen home runs in 86 games during his first full major league season is a strong foundation, especially for a player who is only 22.

Jackson going back to Norfolk is unfortunate because he has shown value and versatility, but this looks more like a roster numbers game than anything else. There is a good chance Baltimore will need Jackson again before the season ends.

For the Orioles, the bigger story is simple.

Samuel Basallo is healthy again, and Baltimore gets another important young bat back in the lineup.

That is good news for the remainder of 2026 and, more importantly, for the Orioles’ future.
