Frances Tiafoe vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime — Cincinnati Open Round of 16 Preview

Frances Tiafoe vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime — Cincinnati Open Round of 16 Preview

One of the more intriguing matches on Wednesday night at the Cincinnati Open features Frances Tiafoe against Felix Auger-Aliassime, with the winner moving into the quarterfinals. The match is scheduled not before 7 p.m. ET on August 19.

Tiafoe enters Cincinnati as the No. 17 seed and currently sits No. 23 in the ATP rankings, while Auger-Aliassime is the tournament’s No. 2 seed and is ranked No. 4 in the world. That makes Auger-Aliassime the favorite on paper, but Tiafoe has already shown this summer that he can beat the Canadian when his serve and forehand are clicking.

Tiafoe arrives battle-tested

Tiafoe had to work considerably harder to reach this point. He defeated fellow American Learner Tien 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the third round Tuesday night, needing two hours and nine minutes to get through a match filled with long baseline exchanges. Tiafoe finally broke at 3-3 in the deciding set and closed the match with his ninth ace.

That match could cut both ways.

Tiafoe spent more time on court and had to expend significantly more energy than Auger-Aliassime. However, he also got an opportunity to play himself into rhythm under pressure. Tiafoe tends to become especially dangerous when he starts feeding off the crowd, and an American playing a night match in Cincinnati should have plenty of support.

His confidence should also be significantly higher than it was earlier in the season.

Tiafoe won the biggest title of his career at Halle in June, beating Taylor Fritz in the final to capture the ATP 500 championship. During that run, he also defeated Auger-Aliassime in one of the most dramatic matches of his season.

Auger-Aliassime has looked dangerous

Auger-Aliassime has taken a much more straightforward route through Cincinnati.

He defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo 7-5, 6-1 in the third round, completely taking control once he survived a competitive opening set. It marked his second consecutive straight-set victory at the tournament.

That is particularly important for Auger-Aliassime because his game becomes extremely difficult to handle when he is protecting his serve.

At 6-foot-4, Auger-Aliassime can generate easy points with the first serve and immediately take control with his forehand. Cincinnati’s hard courts reward that combination. If he consistently gets first serves into Tiafoe’s backhand corner, Tiafoe may struggle to get enough neutral rallies started.

There is also the rest advantage. Auger-Aliassime finished his third-round match Tuesday while Tiafoe had to grind through three sets against Tien.

The Halle match changes the equation

The most relevant matchup between the two came just two months ago.

Tiafoe defeated Auger-Aliassime 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(12) in the Halle quarterfinals on June 19. The match was about as close as possible. Auger-Aliassime hit 25 aces, while Tiafoe saved three match points and seven of nine break opportunities before eventually surviving the deciding tiebreak.

That result matters because Tiafoe now knows he can withstand Auger-Aliassime’s biggest weapon.

He did not have to dominate the Canadian’s serve. He simply stayed close enough to give himself an opportunity late.

That is probably the formula again Wednesday.

Keys for Tiafoe

Protect the second serve. Auger-Aliassime will attack anything short or slow. Tiafoe cannot give him repeated looks at second serves inside the baseline.

Make Felix hit extra backhands. Auger-Aliassime’s forehand can dictate matches. Tiafoe should avoid simply trading forehands and instead change direction frequently.

Keep sets close. Tiafoe does not necessarily need to break Auger-Aliassime multiple times. If he can push sets toward 5-5 or a tiebreak, his improvisation and shot-making become much more valuable.

Use the crowd. Tiafoe is one of the best players on tour at turning emotional momentum into better tennis. A night crowd in Ohio could give him an extra boost if the match gets tight.

Keys for Auger-Aliassime

Serve efficiently. When Auger-Aliassime is landing his first serve consistently, Tiafoe will have difficulty getting into return games.

Attack Tiafoe’s backhand return. Felix should be able to open the court with wide serves and then attack the next ball.

Do not allow Tiafoe to turn this into entertainment. Tiafoe becomes considerably more dangerous once extended rallies, flashy points and crowd involvement begin piling up.

Make Tiafoe work physically. Tiafoe played three sets against Tien. Felix should test his legs with deep, heavy groundstrokes rather than trying to finish every point immediately.

Matchup edge

Serve: Auger-Aliassime
Return: Slight Auger-Aliassime
Forehand: Auger-Aliassime
Movement/defense: Tiafoe
Variety: Tiafoe
Current ranking/form: Auger-Aliassime
Crowd advantage: Tiafoe
Recent head-to-head confidence: Tiafoe

This looks considerably closer than a No. 4 player facing No. 23 normally would.

Auger-Aliassime deserves to be favored because he has the more repeatable serve, has spent less time on court in Cincinnati and has been playing at an elite level throughout 2026. But Tiafoe’s Halle victory provides a blueprint.

If Felix serves well and gets ahead early, he could win this relatively comfortably. If Tiafoe steals the opening set or drags Auger-Aliassime into another deciding-set battle, the American becomes very dangerous.

Prediction

Felix Auger-Aliassime defeats Frances Tiafoe, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

I would put it around 60-40 Auger-Aliassime. Felix has the higher floor because of his serve and current form, but this is absolutely a match Tiafoe can win. The upset path is keeping the first set close, forcing Felix to play pressure points and getting the Cincinnati crowd involved.

Best chance for an upset: Tiafoe pushes the match to three sets.
Most important statistic: Tiafoe’s first-serve percentage.
Player with more pressure: Auger-Aliassime.

One correction from some early listings: this is a Round-of-16 match Wednesday, August 19, not August 20; Thursday is when Cincinnati begins its men’s quarterfinal schedule.
