Padres Hit Five Home Runs, Hand Orioles 9-3 Loss as Late Henderson HBP Sparks Controversy

The Baltimore Orioles matched the San Diego Padres with 10 hits Saturday night at Camden Yards, but five San Diego home runs and missed opportunities with runners on base proved to be the difference in a 9-3 loss.
The Padres jumped on Tanner Gibson immediately and never looked back, building a four-run lead in the first inning before riding their power surge to even the series.
By the end of the night, however, much of the attention had shifted away from the scoreboard and toward the ninth inning after Gunnar Henderson was hit by a pitch from Padres reliever Ron Marinaccio. The incident resulted in the ejections of Marinaccio and Padres manager Mike Shildt and left Orioles fans furious.
Padres Strike Early
San Diego wasted little time against Gibson.
Jackson Merrill opened the scoring with a two-run home run to left-center field after Fernando Tatis Jr. reached base. Later in the inning, Sam Taylor connected for a second two-run homer, giving the Padres a 4-0 lead before the Orioles could settle into the game.
Baltimore responded immediately in the bottom of the first.
Pete Alonso blasted a 392-foot solo home run to right-center field, his 16th of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
The Orioles never got closer.
Alonso, Alexander Lead Orioles Offense
Alonso continued his strong season with one of Baltimore’s best performances of the night.
The veteran first baseman finished 3-for-5 with a home run, double, two RBI and a run scored.
Blaze Alexander was equally impressive, collecting three hits in four at-bats and accounting for nearly a third of Baltimore’s offensive production.
Leody Taveras delivered a triple and RBI, Samuel Basallo reached base twice with a hit and walk, and Coby Mayo added a pinch-hit double off the bench.
Despite the production, Baltimore struggled when it mattered most.
The Orioles finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners.
Gibson Battles Through Difficult Night
Gibson’s final line was unusual.
The right-hander struck out seven batters in 4.1 innings but surrendered six earned runs while walking five.
Final line:
- 4.1 IP
- 3 H
- 6 ER
- 5 BB
- 7 K
- 2 HR
Albert Suárez gave the Orioles four innings out of the bullpen, but San Diego added three more solo home runs against him from Gavin Sheets, Randy Durán and Manny Machado.
The Padres finished with five home runs and all nine runs were earned.
Ninth-Inning Incident Draws Attention
The game’s biggest talking point came in the ninth inning.
With San Diego leading 9-3, Ron Marinaccio hit Gunnar Henderson with a pitch. The situation quickly escalated.
Umpires ejected Marinaccio, and moments later Padres manager Mike Shildt was also tossed.
Marinaccio recorded just two outs before being removed.
MLB will determine whether additional discipline is warranted, but the sequence guaranteed the incident would become a major postgame storyline.
The Orioles lost the game because San Diego hit five home runs and Baltimore failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Still, the final image most fans will remember is Henderson standing on first base after being hit, followed by the ejections that brought a tense night at Camden Yards to an emotional finish.
