Wizards Drop Second Straight, Fall 108-94 to Clippers in NBA Summer League
The Washington Wizards dropped their second consecutive NBA Summer League game Wednesday night, falling 108-94 to the Los Angeles Clippers in Las Vegas. After opening Summer League with back-to-back victories, Washington has now slipped to 2-2 following losses to the Chicago Bulls and Clippers.
Playing without No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa, the Wizards battled through a competitive first half before the Clippers took control after halftime. Washington matched Los Angeles nearly shot for shot early, with the first quarter ending tied at 25-25 after eight lead changes.
The Wizards continued to fight in the second quarter and even put together a 10-0 run to briefly grab momentum. However, the Clippers answered with a basket at the halftime buzzer to take a slim 52-51 lead into the locker room.
The game turned in the third quarter.
After Seth Trimble connected on a three-pointer to tie the game early in the period, Los Angeles responded with a decisive 17-5 run. The Clippers took advantage of Washington turnovers, converted in transition and knocked down timely outside shots while building a double-digit advantage. Los Angeles outscored the Wizards 30-19 in the third quarter and never allowed Washington to seriously threaten the lead again.
Despite the loss, rookie guard Seth Trimble continued to be one of the biggest bright spots of the Wizards’ Summer League. The former North Carolina standout poured in a game-high 24 points while shooting 8-for-12 from the field. Trimble attacked the rim with confidence, knocked down perimeter shots and once again demonstrated why he has been one of Washington’s most consistent performers in Las Vegas.
Chris Livingston also delivered another strong performance, finishing with 20 points and nine rebounds. Livingston played aggressively on both ends of the floor and narrowly missed recording a double-double while continuing to strengthen his case for a larger role heading into training camp.
Washington also received solid defensive efforts from Kadary Richmond and Norris Agbakoko, who combined for seven blocked shots. Their rim protection kept the Wizards within striking distance early, but the Clippers’ offensive execution in the second half proved too much to overcome.
The Wizards struggled to generate consistent offense after halftime and had difficulty slowing the Clippers once momentum shifted. Washington’s turnovers and inability to string together defensive stops allowed Los Angeles to steadily increase its lead throughout the final two quarters.
Although the Summer League championship is no longer within reach, Washington still has one game remaining in Las Vegas. The final contest will provide another opportunity for young players such as Trimble, Livingston, Richmond and Agbakoko to continue their development before training camp begins.
