Why this game matters
A win would likely put the United States in excellent position to advance before the final group match against Turkey. A draw would still keep the U.S. in good shape, but it would make the Turkey game much more important.
Australia already changed the group by beating Turkey. The Socceroos did not just survive that opener. They defended, countered and got eight saves from 22-year-old goalkeeper Patrick Beach in a major World Cup debut.
USA storylines
The biggest storyline is Christian Pulisic’s health. Pulisic left the Paraguay game at halftime with a calf issue and has been considered day-to-day. Tim Weah and Tyler Adams sounded optimistic, but the U.S. has to be careful with its captain this early in the tournament.
Folarin Balogun became the breakout star of the opener. Balogun scored twice against Paraguay, becoming the first U.S. player since 1930 to score multiple goals in a World Cup match. That matters because the United States has searched for a true tournament striker for years. Balogun gave them one immediately.
Gio Reyna also scored against Paraguay and could start or play a larger role if Pulisic is limited. Reyna’s passing, patience and creativity could be huge against an Australia team that will likely sit deeper than Paraguay did.
Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie will have to match Australia physically. Australia will not be afraid of contact, second balls or direct play. Adams has to clean up transition chances, while McKennie has to win duels and crash the box.
Australia storylines
Australia’s opener was built on bravery and counterattacking. Irankunda scored in the 27th minute, Metcalfe added the second in the 75th, and Beach made eight saves to keep Turkey scoreless.
Nestory Irankunda is the biggest danger. His pace can punish the U.S. if Antonee Robinson or the opposite fullback pushes too high. The U.S. cannot lose the ball cheaply with numbers forward.
Connor Metcalfe gives Australia a midfield runner who can turn pressure into a goal quickly. His goal against Turkey came from a midfield turnover and a powerful left-footed finish.
Patrick Beach may be the wild card. Australia made a bold choice by starting Beach over veteran Mat Ryan, and Beach rewarded that decision with a clean sheet. If the U.S. lets Beach settle in, Australia’s confidence will grow.
Tactical keys
The U.S. needs to start fast again. An early goal would force Australia out of its defensive shape and open space for Balogun, Weah, Reyna and McKennie.
The Americans also need smart fullback play. Australia wants space behind the back line. Robinson can be dangerous going forward, but the U.S. cannot leave Irankunda in open grass.
Set pieces matter. Australia has size, strength and confidence. The U.S. has to defend corners cleanly and avoid unnecessary fouls.
Projected USA lineup
GK: Matt Turner
DEF: Sergiño Dest, Chris Richards, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson
MID: Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman
FWD: Tim Weah, Folarin Balogun, Christian Pulisic/Gio Reyna
If Pulisic cannot start, Reyna should be the first choice. Brenden Aaronson also makes sense if Pochettino wants more pressing and energy.
Prediction
Australia will make this uncomfortable. The Socceroos are organized, physical and dangerous on the break. But the United States has more attacking quality and should have enough to create chances if the midfield controls the game.
Prediction: United States 2, Australia 1
Projected scorers: Balogun, Reyna; Irankunda.
