UMBC Volleyball Releases 2026 Schedule: Defending America East Champions Ready for Another NCAA Tournament Push

The road back to the NCAA Tournament is officially set.
Defending America East champion UMBC announced its complete 2026 women’s volleyball schedule Tuesday, unveiling a 20-match slate that features nine home contests at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (“The Peake”), several strong non-conference tests, and another challenging conference schedule as the Retrievers look to defend their league title. The schedule comes after UMBC captured its fifth America East Championship in the last six seasons and earned another trip to the NCAA Tournament, cementing the program as one of the premier mid-major volleyball powers in the Northeast.
Head coach Kasey Crider has built a championship culture in Catonsville, and the 2026 schedule gives the Retrievers another opportunity to prove they belong among the nation’s top mid-major programs.

Strong Non-Conference Schedule
The Retrievers will waste little time facing quality competition.
Opening against Big 12 member West Virginia on the road provides an immediate measuring stick. The Mountaineers annually compete against some of the nation’s strongest volleyball programs, making that match one of UMBC’s toughest regular-season tests before conference play begins. The opening weekend also includes a matchup against Texas Rio Grande Valley, giving the Retrievers an opportunity to start the year with momentum before facing the tournament host.
The following weekend features another challenging road tournament with Buffalo and Canisius. Both programs have enjoyed success in recent years, making the trip to western New York another important early-season evaluation.
Home Crowd Will Play Major Role
One of the biggest strengths for UMBC has become its home-court advantage.
The Retrievers will finally make their home debut during a three-match weekend at The Peake, welcoming George Mason, George Washington, and Georgetown on three consecutive days. That stretch should provide Retriever Nation with its first opportunity to see the defending conference champions in action.
UMBC won nine of its final 10 home matches last season, making The Peake one of the toughest places to play in the America East. If the Retrievers can duplicate that success, it could once again become a major factor in the conference championship race.
Conference Season Begins with Championship Rematch
Conference play begins immediately with two enormous road matches.
The Retrievers open America East competition Sept. 25 against UAlbany in a rematch of last season’s conference championship battle before traveling to Bryant two days later. Starting league play on the road will test UMBC early, but victories in those matches would immediately strengthen the Retrievers’ chances of repeating as regular-season champions.
The home conference opener arrives Oct. 4 against NJIT before another difficult trip to Binghamton.
October Could Decide the Season
October appears to be the most important month on the schedule.
Following the road game at Binghamton, UMBC enjoys a lengthy homestand beginning with a non-conference matchup against Howard before hosting conference rivals New Hampshire, Bryant, and UAlbany.
Those four home contests could ultimately determine conference seeding and whether the Retrievers earn another favorable path through the America East Tournament.
Bryant and UAlbany have consistently challenged UMBC near the top of the conference standings, making those late-season home matches especially important.
Experienced Program Built for Success
The Retrievers enter the season carrying the confidence that comes with sustained excellence.
Winning five America East championships in six seasons is no accident. UMBC has consistently developed players, recruited well, and maintained one of the league’s deepest rosters. The coaching staff has created a winning culture built around disciplined defense, efficient serving, and balanced offensive production.
Rather than relying on one superstar, UMBC has traditionally succeeded through depth, allowing different players to step forward throughout the season depending on the opponent and match situation.
That formula has resulted in conference championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, and continued national respect for the program.
Biggest Matches to Watch
Several contests stand out as must-watch matches during the 2026 campaign.
The season opener against West Virginia will immediately show where the Retrievers stack up against Power Four competition.
The Sept. 25 conference opener at UAlbany could have championship implications from the opening weekend of league play.
The Oct. 24 home showdown with Bryant and the Nov. 1 matchup against UAlbany may ultimately decide the America East regular-season championship.
Finally, Senior Day against Binghamton on Nov. 15 closes the regular season and could determine NCAA Tournament positioning before the America East Championship begins.
MSB Take
UMBC volleyball has quietly become one of the most successful athletic programs in Maryland.
While basketball often grabs the headlines, the Retrievers continue to compete for conference championships every season and have established themselves as one of the nation’s better mid-major volleyball programs. The 2026 schedule provides the perfect balance of challenging non-conference competition and meaningful America East matches that should prepare UMBC for another postseason run.
With nine home matches, an experienced coaching staff, and the confidence that comes from winning another conference championship, there’s every reason to believe the Retrievers will once again be in the hunt for an America East title and another NCAA Tournament berth. Retriever fans should circle several dates on the calendar because this team has all the pieces to make another memorable season.
