Series Preview: Orioles Return Home to Face First-Place Cubs

The Baltimore Orioles return to Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Tuesday night for a challenging three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. Baltimore enters the series at 42-49, while Chicago arrives with a 50-40 record and remains firmly in the National League playoff race.

The Orioles are coming off a series win in Cincinnati and are looking to build momentum before the All-Star break. They’ll face one of baseball’s deepest lineups, led by several All-Star caliber players.

Probable Pitching Matchups

Game 1 (Tuesday, 6:35 p.m.)

  • Cubs: Matthew Boyd (LHP)
  • Orioles: Shane Baz (RHP)

Baz has settled in nicely for Baltimore, posting a 3.68 ERA in June while recording three quality starts. The Orioles will need another strong outing against a Cubs lineup that has punished right-handed pitching throughout the season.

Game 2 (Wednesday)

  • Cubs: Cade Horton (RHP) (expected)
  • Orioles: Dean Kremer (RHP)

Kremer is coming off one of his better starts after returning from injury, allowing just one run over six innings against the White Sox. Baltimore hopes he can continue that momentum.

Game 3 (Thursday)

  • Cubs: Shota Imanaga (LHP) (expected)
  • Orioles: Trevor Rogers (LHP)

Rogers has quietly become one of Baltimore’s more consistent starters and will try to help the Orioles secure the series finale.

Cubs Players to Watch

Pete Crow-Armstrong

Crow-Armstrong has become one of the hottest players in baseball. He was named the National League Player of the Month for June and recently earned his second All-Star selection. His combination of power, speed, and elite defense makes him one of the game’s most dangerous young stars.

Kyle Tucker

Tucker continues to anchor Chicago’s lineup with his consistent power and ability to get on base. Baltimore’s pitching staff cannot afford to let him hit with runners aboard.

Seiya Suzuki

Suzuki has supplied plenty of run production this season and gives the Cubs another dangerous middle-of-the-order bat capable of changing a game with one swing.

Michael Conforto

The veteran outfielder has been swinging a hot bat lately and gives Chicago even more depth throughout its lineup.

Orioles Players to Watch

Gunnar Henderson

Henderson continues to be Baltimore’s offensive catalyst. When he reaches base early in games, the Orioles become a much tougher lineup to navigate.

Adley Rutschman

The three-time All-Star catcher remains the heartbeat of Baltimore’s offense and pitching staff. His ability to work counts and drive in runs will be critical.

Pete Alonso

Alonso has provided exactly the middle-of-the-order power the Orioles hoped for, giving Baltimore a legitimate home run threat every night.

Shane Baz

Game 1 could set the tone for the entire series. If Baz can neutralize Chicago’s powerful lineup, Baltimore has an excellent opportunity to grab the opener.

Keys to the Series

  • Get quality starts. Baltimore’s starters need to pitch into the sixth inning to avoid overworking the bullpen.
  • Limit Crow-Armstrong and Tucker. Chicago’s offense becomes much less explosive if those two are kept in check.
  • Capitalize on scoring opportunities. The Orioles have struggled at times with runners in scoring position and must cash in against a quality Cubs pitching staff.
  • Defend home field. With the All-Star break approaching, every win matters in Baltimore’s climb back toward the Wild Card race.

MSB Prediction

This should be one of Baltimore’s toughest home series of the season. The Cubs feature a balanced lineup, strong starting pitching, and excellent defense. However, if Baz wins the opener and Kremer continues his recent form, the Orioles have a realistic chance to take the series.

Prediction: Orioles win the series 2-1, with Shane Baz earning the biggest victory of the week and Baltimore carrying momentum into the final stretch before the All-Star break.
