Orioles Turn to Trey Gibson as Baltimore Chases Sweep Against Rays

The Baltimore Orioles made another aggressive pitching move Wednesday afternoon, recalling top pitching prospect Trey Gibson from Triple-A Norfolk ahead of tonight’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays. Gibson will start the game as Baltimore looks to finish a three-game sweep at Camden Yards.

Baltimore optioned left-hander Nick Raquet to Norfolk to clear roster space for Gibson, who now gets another opportunity to prove he belongs in the Orioles’ long-term rotation plans. The 24-year-old right-hander entered the season ranked among Baltimore’s top pitching prospects and already made his MLB debut earlier this month against the Yankees.

Gibson signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent out of Liberty University following the 2023 MLB Draft. Since then, the right-hander climbed rapidly through the organization. Strong strikeout numbers and a power breaking ball helped Gibson move from Delmarva to Aberdeen, Chesapeake, Norfolk and eventually Baltimore in less than three years.

Tonight’s start carries importance beyond one game. Baltimore continues to search for reliable rotation depth after injuries and inconsistent outings forced the organization to shuffle arms between Norfolk and Camden Yards throughout the season. Gibson’s recall signals another chance for the Orioles to evaluate whether one of their homegrown arms can stabilize the staff during a critical stretch of games.

In limited major league action this season, Gibson has shown flashes of swing-and-miss stuff. Across two appearances and one start entering tonight, Gibson struck out four hitters in 6.2 innings while allowing four earned runs. The Orioles likely will monitor his workload closely because Gibson has not pitched deep into games consistently this year between Norfolk and Baltimore.

At Triple-A Norfolk, Gibson continued to miss bats with an upper-90s fastball and improving secondary pitches. MLB Pipeline and several evaluators inside the organization believe the right-hander possesses mid-rotation upside if command continues developing.

Orioles Riding Momentum Into Finale

Baltimore enters tonight’s matchup playing some of its best baseball in weeks. The Orioles won the first two games of the series, including Tuesday night’s 6-1 victory powered by Samuel Basallo’s three-run homer and another dominant outing from former Ray Shane Baz.

Colton Cowser also continues to heat up after a difficult start to the season. Baltimore opened the series Monday with another dramatic extra-inning victory after Cowser launched his second straight walk-off home run.

The recent surge has helped Baltimore regain momentum after Tampa Bay swept the Orioles in St. Petersburg just last week. That series exposed Baltimore’s bullpen issues and late-game struggles, but the Orioles responded with sharper defense, improved starting pitching and timely hitting during this homestand.

Rays Looking to Avoid Sweep

Tampa Bay enters tonight searching for answers after three straight losses. Defensive mistakes hurt the Rays badly during the first two games of this series. Tampa Bay committed three errors Tuesday night, allowing all six Orioles runs to score unearned.

The Rays still feature dangerous offensive pieces led by Jonathan Aranda, who continues producing RBIs at one of the best rates in the American League. Junior Caminero and Chandler Simpson also remain major threats capable of changing games quickly with power and speed.

Veteran left-hander Steven Matz reportedly will start for Tampa Bay tonight. Matz enters the game with a 4-1 record and a 3.70 ERA, giving the Rays an experienced arm against Baltimore’s young rookie starter.

Matchup to Watch

The biggest storyline tonight centers entirely on Gibson.

Baltimore desperately needs young pitching to emerge around its developing core. Gibson now gets another chance to prove the Orioles can trust him against a division rival during meaningful games in late May. Early command will determine everything. When Gibson attacks the strike zone aggressively, hitters struggle against the life on his fastball and sharp vertical movement on his breaking pitches. Walks and elevated pitch counts, however, have created problems throughout parts of his development.

If Gibson can give Baltimore five competitive innings tonight, the Orioles could complete an impressive sweep against a Rays team that gave them major problems earlier this month.

For an organization still trying to balance playoff hopes with long-term development, tonight feels much bigger than one late-May game. Trey Gibson now steps directly into the spotlight.
