Orioles Sign Infielder Jean Segura to Minor League Deal
The Baltimore Orioles signed infielder Jean Segura to a minor league contract Friday afternoon. Segura played for the Miami Marlins in 2023, playing in 85 games and batting .219 with three home runs and 21 RBIs. On August 1, 2023, Segura was traded to the Cleveland Guardians and promptly released the same day.
Segura signed with the Los Angeles Angels in 2007 and made his MLB debut with them on July 24, 2012. Segura is a two-time All Star. In 2016 he had his best season, hitting 20 home runs and batting .319. Throughout his MLB career, Segura has played in 1,413 games, averaging .281 with an OPS of .728.
On the fielding side, the 34-year old is slightly below average, with a fielding percentage of .97. The average MLB fielding percentage is above .98. However, he plays second base, shortstop, and third base, which has made him a valuable asset during his MLB career, which has spanned over 12 years and six teams, including the Orioles.
Segura has not played in a game this season, but his versatility in the infield will strengthen the AAA Norfolk Tides roster. As infielders Jorge Mateo and Jordan Westburg are injured, he may be a necessary replacement for the team.
