Orioles Shake Up Active Roster Ahead of Reds Series: Jeremiah Jackson Returns, Anthony Nunez Recalled

The Baltimore Orioles made another round of roster moves Friday as they continue to reshape the roster heading into their road series against the Cincinnati Reds. The club recalled infielder Jeremiah Jackson and right-handed pitcher Anthony Nunez from Triple-A Norfolk, placed closer Ryan Helsley on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort (retroactive to June 30), and designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment.

The moves impact both the Orioles’ bullpen and bench as Baltimore attempts to stay in the American League postseason race.

Jackson Earns Another Opportunity

Jeremiah Jackson is back in Baltimore after continuing to show he belongs in the major leagues.

Jackson has appeared in 66 games for the Orioles this season, batting .251 with 50 hits, eight doubles, seven home runs, 32 RBIs and two stolen bases. He has also provided valuable defensive versatility by playing multiple infield positions, giving manager Craig Albernaz another athletic option off the bench.

Maryland Sports Blog has previously argued that Jackson deserved a longer look in the majors, especially considering his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. His return gives Baltimore another energetic player capable of impacting games in several ways.

Nunez Adds Another Fresh Arm

The Orioles also recalled rookie right-hander Anthony Nunez from Triple-A Norfolk.

Nunez has already made his major league debut this season after earning an Opening Day roster spot following an impressive spring training. The 24-year-old has shown a lively fastball and swing-and-miss potential while bouncing between Baltimore and Norfolk as the Orioles continue managing bullpen depth.

With Helsley sidelined, Nunez gives Baltimore another power arm capable of working in middle relief and potentially earning higher-leverage innings if he performs well.

Helsley Heads to the Injured List

The biggest news is the loss of Ryan Helsley.

The veteran closer was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort, retroactive to June 30. Any elbow injury involving a late-inning reliever immediately becomes a concern, especially for a pitcher whose game is built around elite velocity.

Baltimore has not announced a timetable beyond the IL placement, but the club will undoubtedly proceed cautiously with one of its most important bullpen arms.

The Orioles will now rely on a committee approach in the late innings until Helsley returns.

Tromp Designated for Assignment

Veteran catcher Chadwick Tromp was designated for assignment after a brief stint with the Orioles.

Tromp had been added to provide experienced catching depth while Baltimore dealt with injuries behind the plate. With the roster beginning to return to full health, the Orioles elected to clear his 40-man roster spot.

MSB Take

These moves make sense for where the Orioles are right now.

Jackson has earned another opportunity and gives Baltimore more athleticism and lineup flexibility. Nunez strengthens a bullpen that suddenly has a major question mark following Helsley’s injury.

The biggest storyline, however, is Helsley’s elbow. Baltimore can replace bench players and shuttle relievers between Norfolk and the majors, but replacing an established closer is much more difficult. The Orioles will hope this proves to be a short-term absence rather than something that lingers into the second half of the season.

For now, the focus shifts to Cincinnati, where Jackson and Nunez will have an immediate chance to help Baltimore keep its momentum rolling.
