Orioles Rough Up Hunter Greene, Win Third Straight With 8-5 Victory Over Reds

The Baltimore Orioles continued their recent surge Saturday night, defeating the Cincinnati Reds 8-5 at Great American Ball Park for their third consecutive victory. Baltimore wasted no time jumping on Reds ace Hunter Greene, who was making his season debut after returning from the injured list, and built an early lead that proved too much for Cincinnati to overcome.
Rookie catcher Samuel Basallo provided the biggest swing of the night, launching a three-run home run in the first inning. The blast continued Basallo’s hot streak, giving him home runs in back-to-back games and four over his last nine contests.
Baltimore’s offense stayed aggressive in the fourth inning, hanging a five-spot on Greene. Adley Rutschman delivered a clutch two-run double during the rally, while Blaze Alexander added a key two-run single to help the Orioles open an 8-2 advantage. Pete Alonso continued his outstanding season by collecting three hits and driving in another run.
Greene’s highly anticipated return couldn’t have gone much worse. The hard-throwing right-hander surrendered eight earned runs on seven hits and four walks in just 3⅓ innings as Baltimore consistently worked quality at-bats and capitalized on nearly every scoring opportunity.
On the mound, Brandon Young wasn’t at his sharpest early, allowing four runs over the first two innings, but settled down nicely to complete five-plus innings. Young finished with five strikeouts while improving to 7-2 on the season, once again giving the Orioles a chance to win despite some early traffic.
Cincinnati didn’t go quietly. The Reds out-hit Baltimore 11-10 and chipped away at the lead behind multi-hit performances from Jose Trevino and Elly De La Cruz. Eugenio Suárez also drove in two runs, but the early deficit proved too large to erase. The Reds stranded nine runners on base, a major factor in the outcome.
Baltimore’s bullpen did enough to preserve the lead. After several relievers bridged the middle innings, closer Tyler Wells worked through a tense ninth inning to earn his second consecutive save, sealing the 8-5 victory.
The victory gives the Orioles three straight wins and puts them in position to complete a road sweep of the Reds. More importantly, Baltimore’s offense has shown signs of coming alive, scoring 17 runs over the first two games of the series while receiving timely contributions throughout the lineup. Basallo’s emergence, Rutschman’s continued production, Alonso’s steady bat, and Young’s continued development have all been encouraging signs for a club looking to build momentum heading into the second half of the season.
MSB Take
This was exactly the kind of game Orioles fans have been waiting to see. Baltimore attacked one of baseball’s hardest throwers from the opening inning, never let Greene get comfortable, and received contributions from veterans and young stars alike. Basallo continues to look more confident every game, Rutschman is playing like an All-Star again, and Young keeps proving he belongs in the rotation.
The Orioles now have an opportunity to finish off a sweep in Cincinnati and carry real momentum back home. If the offense keeps producing at this level and the starting pitching remains steady, Baltimore could make the second half of the season much more interesting than many expected.
