Orioles Recall Sam Huff, DFA Weston Wilson Following Basallo Injury Concern

The Baltimore Orioles made a notable roster move Saturday, recalling catcher Sam Huff from Triple-A Norfolk while designating utilityman Weston Wilson for assignment. The move comes less than 24 hours after rookie catcher Samuel Basallo exited Friday night’s 13-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays with abdominal discomfort.
While the timing naturally raises concerns about Basallo’s health, this appears to be more about catching depth than a direct indication that Baltimore expects a lengthy absence. The Orioles suddenly found themselves one awkward swing away from having only Adley Rutschman available behind the plate.
Huff has been productive for Norfolk this season. In 23 games with the Tides, the veteran catcher was hitting .275 with 4 home runs, 13 RBIs, a .359 on-base percentage, and a .633 OPS while providing experienced depth at a premium position. Huff also briefly appeared with Baltimore earlier this season, going 2-for-9 with a double and an RBI during a three-game stint.
The 28-year-old former Texas Rangers prospect has appeared in parts of six major league seasons, compiling a career .246 average with 12 home runs and 25 RBIs in limited big-league action. His power has always been his calling card, making him a logical emergency option if Basallo needs a few days off.
Wilson’s designation is likely more of a numbers crunch than an indictment of his performance. The versatile veteran has filled multiple roles for Baltimore this season and remained a valuable depth piece capable of playing the outfield and infield corners.
At Triple-A Norfolk, Wilson was one of the Tides’ more productive hitters early in the season, contributing power and versatility while helping stabilize a roster that has seen constant movement between Norfolk and Baltimore. He also spent time on the Orioles’ active roster after being selected in April following injuries to several position players.
The reality is that roster flexibility often determines these decisions. Baltimore needed another catcher immediately, and Wilson happened to be the player without options and with the clearest path to a DFA. Given his ability to play multiple positions and his respectable major league track record, there is a reasonable chance another organization could claim him.
The bigger story remains Basallo. The Orioles have not announced any injured list move, and manager Craig Albernaz indicated Friday that the removal was precautionary. However, recalling a catcher instead of another position player strongly suggests the club wanted protection in case Basallo’s abdominal issue lingers through the weekend.
For now, Orioles fans should view Huff’s promotion as insurance. If Basallo is available this weekend, Baltimore simply gains an extra catcher. If the rookie needs additional rest, the Orioles already have a veteran replacement in place. Either way, the move underscores just how important Basallo has become to Baltimore’s lineup only a few months into his major league career.
