Orioles Rally Late but Fall Short in Gut-Wrenching 10-Inning Loss to Mariners, 6-5

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles looked dead in the water for much of Tuesday night. Then they nearly pulled off one of their most dramatic victories of the season.
Instead, another painful loss was added to a growing list of missed opportunities.
After erasing a two-run deficit in the ninth inning, the Orioles surrendered a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th and ultimately fell 6-5 to the Seattle Mariners at Camden Yards. Baltimore had multiple chances to steal the game but could not deliver the final blow.
The loss dropped Baltimore’s losing streak to four games and wasted one of the club’s grittiest comeback efforts of the season.
Fast Start Before Offensive Drought
The Orioles came out aggressively against Seattle ace Logan Gilbert.
Baltimore pushed across an early run in the first inning and forced Gilbert to throw more than 30 pitches in the opening frame. It appeared the Orioles might be headed for a productive offensive night.
Instead, Gilbert settled in and dominated.
Seattle’s right-hander retired 14 consecutive Orioles at one point and kept Baltimore’s lineup quiet through the middle innings. The Orioles struggled to string together quality at-bats and repeatedly failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Trevor Rogers Gives Orioles a Chance
Trevor Rogers turned in a competitive outing despite taking a no-decision.
The left-hander allowed three runs across 5⅔ innings. While he did not have his sharpest swing-and-miss stuff, Rogers kept Baltimore within striking distance against one of the American League’s better lineups.
The biggest blow came when Mitch Garver launched a three-run homer for Seattle, helping the Mariners grab control of the game.
Even with the deficit, Baltimore’s pitching staff largely kept the game manageable and gave the offense a chance to rally.
Orioles Continue to Hurt Themselves
One of the night’s biggest storylines was Baltimore’s baserunning.
The Orioles were thrown out at home plate three separate times, costing themselves valuable scoring opportunities and potentially changing the outcome of the game. Several innings that could have become crooked numbers instead ended with runners being erased on the bases.
For a club trying to climb back into the postseason race, those mistakes proved devastating.
Baltimore finished just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners on base.
Mayo Sparks the Comeback
Just when it looked like another frustrating defeat was inevitable, the Orioles came alive in the ninth.
Coby Mayo continued his recent hot streak by delivering a massive home run that energized the Camden Yards crowd and cut into Seattle’s lead. Baltimore followed with additional pressure against Mariners reliever José Ferrer.
Leody Taveras contributed a key hit during the rally as the Orioles clawed back to tie the game at 4-4.
Suddenly, a game that looked lost was headed to extra innings.
Arozarena Delivers the Knockout Blow
The excitement did not last long.
In the top of the 10th inning, Randy Arozarena crushed a two-run homer off Orioles reliever Rico Garcia. The blast gave Seattle a 6-4 advantage and immediately shifted momentum back to the visitors.
Arozarena finished with three hits and was Seattle’s most dangerous hitter throughout the night.
Garcia was charged with the loss after the homer put Baltimore behind for good.
One Last Chance
To their credit, the Orioles refused to quit.
Baltimore scored once in the bottom of the 10th and quickly put pressure on Seattle’s bullpen. The tying run moved into scoring position while the winning run also reached base.
However, another costly baserunning mistake proved fatal.
Blaze Alexander was tagged out at home plate during Baltimore’s final rally, ending one of the Orioles’ best opportunities to tie the game. Seattle rookie Nick Davila then recorded the final outs to secure his first major league save.
Final Thoughts
This was the type of loss that lingers.
The Orioles showed resilience by battling back in the ninth inning and refusing to fold after falling behind multiple times. But poor execution on the bases, missed opportunities with runners in scoring position, and a lack of timely hitting ultimately cost them.
Baltimore had chances to win this game.
Three runners thrown out at home plate.
Ten runners left on base.
A bases-loaded opportunity late.
Those are the margins between winning and losing in June baseball.
Instead of celebrating a dramatic comeback victory, the Orioles were left wondering what might have been as another heartbreaking defeat slipped away at Camden Yards.
Final Score
Seattle Mariners 6
Baltimore Orioles 5 (10 innings)
