Orioles Notes: Gibson’s struggles continue, Cowser expected to return
The Baltimore Orioles lost to the Chicago White Sox yesterday 10 to 5 in a game in which they started with a four to 0 lead. Kyle Gibson went only 4.1 innings and gave up seven earned runs. Gibson has posted a 7.57 era in August, something that has lead to some uncompetitive games.
With starting pitcher John Means expected to return soon, he is likely pitching his last rehab start tonight, the Orioles have a decision with Gibson. Gibson has by far been the worst starting pitcher for the Orioles, yes he has had some solid games but his era now sits at 5.15.
The Orioles have their top three starters set right now with Kyle Bradish, Grayson Rodriguez, and Dean Kreamer. Cole Irvin has been solid since returning to a starter role and Jack Flaherty has big upside. I do not think the Orioles will lose much if they DFA Gibson for a 40-man spot when Means returns, the chances of him being claimed are slim. If the Orioles want to keep Gibson in the Minors to work on thing that could help too.
Colton Cowser and Joey Krehbiel are expected to join the Orioles for the September 1st roster expansion tomorrow, according to Roch Kubatko. Cowser struggled in his first stint with the Orioles but is still a top prospect in the organization. Cowser hit just .115 with two doubles and 13 walks in 77 plate appearances. The talent is there for Cowser, he just needs to lock in.
Krehbiel has been solid while with the Orioles but has been on more of a swing role between Norfolk and Baltimore.
I am a little surprised that the Orioles are picking Krehbiel over Bryan Baker and Mike Baumann who both have better stuff. I know the Orioles are monitoring Baumann and slowing him down on his innings.
I expect the Orioles active roster to remain flued with the expanded roster and several players getting healthy.
