Orioles Let Tight Game Slip Away as White Sox Pull Away Late, Win 8-2

The Baltimore Orioles were in position to begin their series against the Chicago White Sox with a victory Monday night at Camden Yards. Instead, a close game unraveled over the final two innings as Chicago scored six unanswered runs to hand Baltimore an 8-2 loss.

For seven innings, the Orioles received exactly the type of outing they needed from Shane Baz. The right-hander matched White Sox starter Sean Burke pitch for pitch, keeping the game tied while giving Baltimore every opportunity to pull out a win. Unfortunately for the Orioles, the offense never found its rhythm, the bullpen faltered in the eighth and ninth innings, and a costly defensive mistake turned a manageable deficit into a blowout.

The loss dropped Baltimore to 39-47, matching its season low at eight games under .500 and continuing a frustrating stretch in which timely hitting has been difficult to find.

Early offense comes from Rutschman

Baltimore struck first in the opening inning after Gunnar Henderson reached base and eventually came home on an Adley Rutschman sacrifice fly to left field. The Orioles manufactured the run despite collecting only one hit in the inning.

Chicago answered in the third. Jacob Gonzalez lined an RBI double into center to score Chase Meidroth before Kyle Teel followed with an infield single that plated another run, giving the White Sox a 2-1 advantage.

The Orioles immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning. Blaze Alexander reached, advanced into scoring position, and scored on Rutschman’s second sacrifice fly of the evening to even the game at 2-2.

That would be Baltimore’s final run of the night.

Baz gives Orioles a chance

Despite taking a no-decision, Baz delivered one of his better outings of the season.

The right-hander worked seven innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out six. Although he issued four walks, Baz repeatedly escaped trouble and needed a career-high 109 pitches to finish seven innings.

The outing continued a strong stretch for Baz, who has quietly become one of Baltimore’s most dependable starters over the past six weeks. He exited with the score tied, putting the game squarely in the hands of the bullpen.

Burke shuts down Orioles lineup

Sean Burke proved equally effective for Chicago.

The White Sox starter allowed just four hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out eight Orioles hitters. Baltimore struggled to string together quality at-bats and repeatedly chased pitches out of the strike zone.

Chicago’s bullpen was even better. Chris Murphy bridged the game to Grant Taylor, who earned the victory with two scoreless innings. Brandon Eisert finished the game by striking out the side in the ninth.

After the sixth inning, Baltimore failed to record another hit.

Eighth inning changes everything

With the score tied entering the eighth, Grant Wolfram inherited the game for Baltimore.

Sam Antonacci reached after being hit by a pitch before Colson Montgomery ripped a go-ahead RBI double into center field. Moments later, Randal Grichuk lined a single to center that scored Montgomery and extended Chicago’s lead to 4-2.

What had been a well-pitched game suddenly shifted firmly toward the visitors.

Ninth inning gets away from Baltimore

The Orioles still had a chance entering the ninth but the inning quickly spiraled.

Jacob Gonzalez delivered a two-run single to center field, pushing the lead to 6-2. Later in the inning, Blaze Alexander committed a throwing error that allowed two more White Sox runs to score, turning a competitive game into an 8-2 final.

Alexander had been one of Baltimore’s steadier defensive infielders this season, making the mistake particularly costly.

Orioles offense never finds an answer

Baltimore managed only four hits all night.

Gunnar Henderson led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a walk and scoring one run. Samuel Basallo added a single, while Jackson Holliday also collected a hit.

Rutschman finished 0-for-2 but drove in both Orioles runs with sacrifice flies.

Pete Alonso endured a difficult evening, finishing hitless while striking out three times. Dylan Beavers also struck out twice as Baltimore’s lineup fanned 13 times overall.

The Orioles went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded several opportunities before the White Sox bullpen took complete control late.

White Sox balanced attack

Chicago received contributions throughout its lineup.

Jacob Gonzalez paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Colson Montgomery delivered the game’s biggest hit with the eighth-inning go-ahead double, while Randal Grichuk added an RBI single.

Every White Sox starter reached base or recorded a hit as Chicago finished with 10 hits and capitalized on Baltimore’s late mistakes.

Looking ahead

Baltimore will try to bounce back Tuesday night when Trey Gibson is scheduled to start against former Orioles right-hander Erick Fedde.

If the Orioles hope to avoid another series loss, the offense must provide more support than it did Monday. Baz gave Baltimore a winning-caliber start, but four hits, 13 strikeouts, and a bullpen collapse proved too much to overcome.

The Orioles have now lost three straight games and five of their last six, making the remainder of this homestand increasingly important as the club attempts to climb back into the American League postseason race.
