Nats Tie Cardinals in Ninth, Only to Lose

The Nats lost the first of a four-game series to the Cardinals 7-6. The win was on a walk-off home run hit by Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong, with the loss being awarded to Koda Glover, his first of the season. The win was credited to Dakota Hudson, his third of the season. With this loss, the Nats are now 60-59 and have lost their last two games.

The scoring started in the first inning when Marcell Ozuna, St. Louis’ left fielder, singled on a line drive to Juan Soto, scoring in Matt Carpenter. The lead wouldn’t last long because Ryan Zimmerman, last week’s NL Player of the Week, doubled with Anthony Rendon scoring the tying run. In the top of the fourth, Bryce Harper hit a home run to center field, making it 2-1 with his 29th home run of the season. This lead would last only until the bottom of the fourth, when St. Louis pitcher Miles Mikolas hit a sacrifice fly to Harper to score in Harrison Bader. Then, Juan Soto hit a two-run home run to make the score 4-2 in the top of the 7th inning, his 15th home run of the season. The Cardinals really struck in the bottom of the eighth inning, starting with a solo home run from third baseman Jedd Gyorko. Then, Matt Carpenter hit a 3-run home run to give the Cardinals the lead 6-4, getting his NL-leading 33rd home run of the season. The Nats were able to pull off a rally with two RBI singles hit by Daniel Murphy and Matt Wieters. But the Cardinals would prevail when on a 3-1 pitch to Paul DeJong, a home run was hit to walk off the Nats. The Cardinals won the game 7-6.

Tomorrow’s game will be at 8:15, with the pitching matchup being Gio Gonzalez for the Nats and John Gant for the Cardinals.
