Malcolm Perry Will Be Taking His Talents to South Beach

Late this afternoon the Miami Dolphins used the 246th pick of the NFL Draft to select Malcolm Perry of the Naval Academy, This selection caps an incredible college career. As a senior Perry led Navy to an 11-2 record including wins over Air Force, Army, and Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl. He set the NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 2017 and scored 21 touchdowns. Perry was named American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year for these efforts. Following the season he became a wide receiver so he could catch a scout’s eye and get drafted. He was selected to attend the East/West Shrine Game and the NFL Scouting Combine.

In 2016 Malcolm did not dress for the first game of the season against Fordham. He was fourth on the depth chart and watching the game from the stands. After starting QB Tago Smith tore his ACL in the first half a manager was dispatched to pull him from the stands and get him dressed. Navy had a big lead Perry ended up playing in the 4th quarter dressed the rest of his career. After the season the Navy coaching staff decided he should transition to slot back or A back as it’s referred to in the Navy triple option offense. This was done in an effort to get him the ball more often. He rushed for 1138 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also returned kicks for the Midshipmen.

In 2018 Perry was the starting quarterback but the offense struggled so he ended up splitting time between QB and slot back as Navy struggled to a 3-10 record. Prior to the 2019 season Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo moved him back to quarterback for good. They also brought in Billy Ray Stutzmann from Hawaii to install aspects of the run and shoot offense while helping Malcolm working on his passing. This worked as Perry threw for 1084 yards while completing 55% of his passes. The highlight of the season was 29 carries and 304 yards in the Army game. He set the single season total offense record with 2,831 yards and became the third Navy player to break 4,000 career rushing yards joining Keenan Reynolds and Napoleon McCallum.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out with the Dolphins with off season activities and training camp severely cut back due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Hopefully Coach Flores and staff will think enough of him to give him a shot to show what he can do. Here is a highlight package from the 2019 season.
