Kent Island’s Championship Journey: Buccaneers Dominate the Eastern Shore and Reach the MPSSAA Class 2A State Semifinals

For nearly two decades, Kent Island High School has established itself as one of the premier public-school boys lacrosse programs on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The 2026 Buccaneers continued that tradition in impressive fashion, combining a high-powered offense, disciplined defense, experienced leadership, and outstanding coaching to produce one of the finest seasons in recent program history.
Under longtime head coach Robert Woolley, Kent Island finished the season with a 16-2 record, claimed the Bayside Conference championship, captured the MPSSAA Class 2A East Region title, and advanced to the MPSSAA Class 2A state semifinals before seeing its remarkable campaign come to an end.
The Buccaneers outscored opponents 284-90, averaging nearly 18 goals per game while allowing just over five goals per contest. Those numbers reflected a complete team that excelled in every phase of the game.
More importantly, the season reinforced Kent Island’s reputation as one of Maryland’s model public-school lacrosse programs.
High Expectations
Kent Island entered 2026 expecting to compete for championships.
A large senior class returned after years of varsity experience. The coaching staff believed this group possessed the leadership necessary to challenge the state’s best teams.
Throughout preseason practices, Woolley emphasized fundamentals, conditioning, ball movement and team defense rather than relying upon individual talent.
That philosophy became evident throughout the season.
The Buccaneers rarely depended on one player to carry the offense. Instead, they attacked opponents in waves. Midfielders pushed transition, attackmen shared the ball, faceoff specialists consistently won possessions and the defense forced turnovers before quickly moving the ball upfield.
By May, Kent Island had become one of the most balanced teams in Maryland.
