High School High Lights: Kent Island Buccaneers Battle Through Competitive Basketball Season
Kent Island Buccaneers Battle Through Competitive Basketball Season
The 2025-26 season brought plenty of highs, growing pains, and memorable moments for the Kent Island High School basketball program. Competing in one of the tougher stretches of Maryland public school basketball on the Eastern Shore, the Buccaneers showed toughness throughout the winter while continuing to build a strong foundation for the future.
Kent Island finished the season with an 8-15 overall record and a 6-10 mark in regional play. While the record did not fully reflect the team’s competitiveness, the Buccaneers consistently battled through a demanding schedule filled with experienced conference opponents and difficult road environments.
The Buccaneers opened the year aggressively on both ends of the floor. Transition offense became one of the team’s strengths throughout the season. Kent Island pushed the pace whenever opportunities appeared, forcing turnovers and turning defense into quick points. That style helped the team stay in games even against deeper opponents.
Several close contests defined the season. Kent Island consistently battled through tight fourth quarters, showing resilience against conference rivals and nonconference opponents alike. While not every close game ended in a victory, the experience gained in those pressure situations should benefit the program moving forward.
Defensively, the Buccaneers relied heavily on effort and physicality. Kent Island often matched up against teams with greater size, yet strong rebounding effort and active perimeter defense kept many games within reach. The coaching staff emphasized communication and hustle throughout the year, two areas where the team steadily improved as the season progressed.
The Buccaneers also received strong production from several key contributors throughout the lineup. Raejon Price emerged as one of the team’s offensive leaders, averaging 11.0 points per game while also leading Kent Island with 4.0 assists per contest. Price added defensive value as well, ranking near the team lead with 1.0 steals per game.
Pedro Nguyen provided efficient scoring throughout the season and became one of the Buccaneers’ most reliable offensive players. Nguyen averaged 14.9 points per 32 minutes while shooting an impressive 67 percent from the field, giving Kent Island a consistent scoring option in half-court sets and transition opportunities.
AJ Miller controlled the paint for stretches during the season and supplied important rebounding production. Miller averaged 5.0 rebounds per game while also leading the team with 1.0 blocks per contest. Tommy Fish matched that rebounding production with 5.0 rebounds per game, helping Kent Island compete physically against larger opponents.
Mehki Butler brought energy and defensive pressure to the lineup all season. Butler led the Buccaneers with 4.0 steals per game and consistently created transition opportunities through aggressive perimeter defense.
One of the biggest storylines surrounded the development of the younger players in the rotation. Several underclassmen stepped into larger roles during the middle portion of the schedule and responded well. That growth provided optimism not only for this season’s stretch run but also for the future direction of the program.
The Eastern Shore always presents difficult travel and tough environments, and Kent Island experienced plenty of both this winter. Road games against established programs tested the Buccaneers mentally and physically. Despite those challenges, the team continued competing hard late into the season.
Offensively, Kent Island showed balance at different points throughout the year. Some nights featured strong perimeter shooting performances, while other games leaned heavily on attacking the basket and creating second-chance opportunities. The team’s willingness to adjust offensively became one of its stronger traits as the season evolved.
Leadership also played a major role. Senior players helped stabilize the roster during difficult stretches of the schedule. That veteran presence proved especially important during losing streaks, where the team continued showing energy and effort despite adversity.
The Buccaneers also benefited from strong support throughout the community. Home games created energetic atmospheres that gave Kent Island a noticeable boost during key stretches of the season. Student sections remained active throughout the winter, helping make the gym one of the better environments on the Shore.
As the regular season moved toward postseason play, Kent Island continued improving defensively. Rotations became cleaner, transition defense tightened up, and the overall physicality level increased. Those improvements helped the Buccaneers become more competitive against some of the stronger offensive teams on the schedule.
Rebounding remained another major focus area. Kent Island often emphasized winning second-effort possessions, and several games swung because of hustle plays on the glass. That mentality reflected the overall identity of the team throughout the season.
Even with ups and downs in the win-loss column, the season produced several encouraging signs for the future of the program. Younger contributors gained valuable experience, leadership remained steady, and the team culture continued developing in a positive direction.
The offseason now becomes critical for the next step of the program. Continued development in shooting consistency, ball movement, and half-court execution could help elevate Kent Island into stronger contention next winter. With valuable varsity experience returning, expectations should continue growing.
Basketball programs often measure progress beyond just final records, and Kent Island showed multiple signs of long-term growth throughout the season. Competitive effort rarely disappeared, younger players developed, and the program continued building toward sustained success on the Eastern Shore.
The 2025-26 season may not have produced a championship run, but it gave the Buccaneers important momentum entering the future. With experience returning and another offseason of development ahead, Kent Island appears positioned to continue climbing within Maryland high school basketball.
