Frederick Keys Clinch Playoff Berth, Continue Remarkable Return to Affiliated Baseball

The Frederick Keys are headed to the postseason.

Frederick officially clinched the South Atlantic League North Division first-half title Thursday night with a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Hub City Spartanburgers at Nymeo Field. The win secured a playoff berth and guaranteed the Keys their first postseason appearance since 2017.

For a franchise making its return as the Baltimore Orioles’ High-A affiliate in 2026, the accomplishment is even more impressive. The Keys entered affiliated baseball this season with high expectations and exceeded them by spending much of the first half atop the North Division standings.

At the time of the clinch, Frederick owned one of the best records in the South Atlantic League at 38-21 and sat atop the North Division standings.

A Championship-Caliber First Half

The Keys did not back into the playoffs.

Frederick earned its postseason spot through consistent winning baseball from Opening Day through June. The club built an early lead in the division and repeatedly answered challenges from Greensboro and the rest of the North Division.

Manager Collin Woody’s club has relied on strong starting pitching, a balanced offense, and a defense that has routinely made the routine play while delivering key stops in close games.

The defining stretch came during the final week of the first half. Frederick kept pressure on the division by sweeping a doubleheader against Hub City before ultimately clinching the title with Thursday night’s one-run victory.

Players Who Powered the Playoff Run

Wehiwa Aloy

One of the biggest stars on the roster has been Orioles prospect Wehiwa Aloy.

The talented infielder entered the season as one of Baltimore’s top prospects and quickly showed why. Aloy has supplied power throughout the season while providing steady defense in the infield. His ability to impact games on both sides of the ball helped Frederick maintain its position near the top of the standings for much of the first half.

Nate George

Another standout has been Nate George.

The Orioles’ top prospect has flashed the offensive upside that made him one of the most highly regarded young players in Baltimore’s system. George delivered several key extra-base hits during the first half, including his first home run of the season in April. Frederick’s lineup became significantly deeper whenever George was producing at the top of the order.

Joseph Dzierwa

The Keys’ pitching staff has been anchored by left-hander Joseph Dzierwa.

One of Baltimore’s most intriguing young pitching prospects, Dzierwa made an immediate impact from Opening Day. The southpaw opened the season with a dominant performance and continued to establish himself as one of the better arms in the South Atlantic League. Consistent starts from Dzierwa helped set the tone for the entire pitching staff.

The Bullpen

Every successful minor league team needs reliable relief pitching, and Frederick has received it throughout the first half.

Late-inning arms repeatedly protected narrow leads and prevented losing streaks from developing. The bullpen’s ability to finish games became a major factor in several one-run victories that ultimately helped the Keys secure the division crown.

Why This Clinch Matters

The playoff berth represents much more than simply qualifying for the postseason.

When Major League Baseball’s restructuring removed affiliated baseball from Frederick after the 2020 season, many wondered whether the city would ever again host Orioles-affiliated minor league baseball. Those concerns disappeared when the Orioles and Keys reunited for the 2026 season as a High-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League.

Less than three months into that partnership, the organization already has a division title and playoff appearance to celebrate.

The accomplishment also highlights the strength of Baltimore’s farm system. Several of the players helping Frederick win games today could eventually make an impact at Camden Yards in the coming years.

Looking Ahead

The first-half championship guarantees Frederick a postseason berth, but the Keys are not finished.

The club will now focus on building momentum for the second half while positioning itself for a deep playoff run. Home-field advantage, continued player development, and maintaining health will be priorities over the coming months.

With one of the league’s best records, a talented collection of Orioles prospects, and a fan base energized by the return of affiliated baseball, the Keys have established themselves as legitimate championship contenders.

Final Word

The 2026 Frederick Keys have already made history.

A team returning to affiliated baseball after years away has quickly become one of the best clubs in the South Atlantic League. Behind contributions from prospects such as Wehiwa Aloy, Nate George, Joseph Dzierwa, and a deep supporting cast, the Keys captured the North Division first-half title and punched their ticket to the postseason.

Now the focus shifts from clinching to chasing a championship.

For the first time since 2017, playoff baseball is returning to Frederick.
