June 5: Shorebirds 6, GreenJackets 0

The week started with Delmarva’s first shutout win of the season.

Stephen Still gave the Shorebirds exactly what they needed on the mound. Still worked 5.2 scoreless innings, allowed four hits, walked one and struck out nine. He matched Augusta starter Briggs McKenzie pitch for pitch early, turning the game into a tight pitcher’s duel.

The game remained scoreless into the seventh inning before Delmarva finally broke through.

Miguel Rodriguez delivered the first big swing with a two-run single that scored Raylin Ramos and Jaiden Lo Re. Jose Perez followed with an RBI single, giving the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead.

Delmarva added insurance in the ninth.

Lo Re launched his first Single-A home run to make it 4-0. Braylon Whitaker later drove in two more runs with a single, stretching the lead to 6-0.

Brendan Parks earned the win in relief. Eccel Correa and Zac Lampton helped finish the shutout, with Lampton working a clean ninth.

This was one of Delmarva’s most complete wins of the season. The pitching dominated, the offense came through late and the Shorebirds played clean baseball.

June 6: Shorebirds 7, GreenJackets 3

Delmarva stayed hot Saturday and secured a series victory.

The Shorebirds struck first when Edwin Amparo singled home Stiven Martinez in the first inning. Augusta tied the game on a solo home run by Cooper McMurray in the third, but Delmarva answered in the fifth.

Braylon Whitaker delivered one of the biggest hits of the night, ripping a two-run double that scored Miguel Rodriguez and Juan Ortega. The hit gave Delmarva a 3-1 lead.

Christian Rodriguez gave the Shorebirds a strong start. Rodriguez worked six innings, allowed two runs, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Augusta tied the game in the seventh, but Delmarva’s bullpen kept the game from slipping away. Adrian Heredia escaped a bases-loaded jam and gave the offense a chance to respond.

The Shorebirds responded in the eighth.

Raylin Ramos delivered an RBI single to put Delmarva back in front. Juan Ortega was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making it 5-3. Martinez then added a two-run single to cap the four-run inning.

Heredia earned the win, and Jason Shockley helped finish the final six outs.

The 7-3 victory gave Delmarva four straight wins and showed how much better the team looked when the lineup created pressure late in games.

June 7: Shorebirds 4, GreenJackets 0

Delmarva closed the Augusta series with another shutout.

The Shorebirds beat the GreenJackets 4-0 and extended their winning streak to five games.

Edwin Amparo created the first run in unusual fashion. Amparo tripled in the second inning, then scored when Augusta catcher Nick Montgomery made a bad throw to third. The Little League home run gave Delmarva a 1-0 lead.

Braylon Whitaker extended the lead in the third with an RBI single that scored Andrés Nolaya.

The pitching staff handled the rest.

Andrew Herbert was outstanding in relief. Herbert threw five scoreless innings, struck out five and did not walk anyone. The outing gave him nine scoreless innings across two appearances during the week.

Nolaya added an RBI single in the seventh, and Joshua Liranzo drove in an insurance run with a ninth-inning groundout.

Kenny Leiner finished the game in style, striking out the side in the ninth.

The Shorebirds left Augusta with a dominant series finish, two shutouts in three days and their longest winning streak of the season.

June 10: Fireflies 7, Shorebirds 6

The winning streak ended Tuesday night in Columbia, but Delmarva did not go quietly.

The Shorebirds jumped ahead in the first inning when Stiven Martinez and DJ Layton executed a first-and-third steal. Martinez scored on the play, giving Delmarva a 1-0 lead.

Columbia answered immediately with five runs in the bottom of the first. The Fireflies used four hits and three walks against Esteban Mejia to build a 5-1 lead.

Delmarva started chipping away.

Miguel Rodriguez drove in a run in the second. Layton added a run-scoring hit in the third. Columbia pushed its lead back to 6-3, but the Shorebirds kept fighting.

Layton crushed a solo home run in the seventh, his fourth of the season, to make it 6-4. Jaiden Lo Re later tied the game with a two-run double, scoring Elvin Garcia and Andrés Nolaya.

The comeback was impressive.

The finish was painful.

Columbia scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on a wild pitch that allowed Henry Reyes to score from second. The Fireflies held on for a 7-6 win, ending Delmarva’s five-game winning streak.

Even in defeat, the Shorebirds showed resilience. Falling behind by four runs on the road can bury a young team. Delmarva battled back and nearly stole the opener.

June 11: Fireflies 9, Shorebirds 5

Delmarva dropped its second straight game Wednesday, falling 9-5 to Columbia.

Columbia received a strong start from Jose Gutierrez, who worked six innings and allowed only one run. The Fireflies took control early and forced the Shorebirds to play from behind again.

Brayan Orrantia started for Delmarva and allowed three runs, two earned, over four innings. Orrantia struck out four, walked three and kept the Shorebirds within reach early.

The Delmarva offense had bright spots.

Andrés Nolaya had one of the best individual games of the week, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.

Braylon Whitaker also stayed hot, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Raylin Ramos provided power as well, homering twice in the loss.

The offense produced five runs, but Columbia’s lineup did enough damage to keep Delmarva from completing another comeback.

Player of the Week: Braylon Whitaker

Braylon Whitaker was in the middle of nearly everything good Delmarva did this week.

Whitaker delivered a two-run single in the June 5 shutout. He followed that with a two-run double June 6 and another RBI single in the June 7 shutout. He also went 3-for-5 with an RBI against Columbia on June 11.

Whitaker gave Delmarva consistent run production throughout the week.

Pitcher of the Week: Stephen Still

Stephen Still set the tone for the week.

Still’s 5.2 scoreless innings and nine strikeouts in the June 5 win helped Delmarva claim its first shutout victory of the season. His performance started a dominant three-game stretch for the Shorebirds pitching staff.

Breakout Arm: Andrew Herbert

Andrew Herbert deserves major attention.

Herbert threw five scoreless innings in Delmarva’s June 7 shutout and finished the Augusta series with nine scoreless innings across two appearances.

For a Shorebirds team looking for pitching development, Herbert’s week was a major positive.

Hot Bats

Several Shorebirds hitters produced throughout the week.

Jaiden Lo Re hit his first Single-A home run and later tied the Columbia opener with a two-run double.

DJ Layton homered and continued creating offense with his speed.

Andrés Nolaya finished the week with a big game against Columbia, including a double and home run.

Raylin Ramos homered twice June 11.

Edwin Amparo helped create offense in the Augusta finale with a triple and hustle around the bases.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

This was one of Delmarva’s best weeks of the season.

The Shorebirds went 3-2, but the record does not tell the full story.

Delmarva shut out Augusta twice. The pitching staff dominated Friday and Sunday. The offense delivered late in close games. The Shorebirds showed toughness after falling behind in Columbia.

The week also showed real development.

Stephen Still looked sharp. Andrew Herbert dominated in relief. Braylon Whitaker drove in key runs. Jaiden Lo Re delivered his first Single-A homer. Andrés Nolaya, DJ Layton and Raylin Ramos all provided offensive sparks.

For an Orioles Single-A affiliate, that matters more than the standings.

The Shorebirds are still young. They are still inconsistent. But this week showed what the group can become when the pitching staff throws strikes and the lineup gets timely hits.

Delmarva may have lost its winning streak in Columbia, but the Shorebirds gained momentum as a development story.

That makes this week a success.
