Chesapeake Baysox Weekly Recap: June 12-19, 2026

The Chesapeake Baysox continue to battle through a difficult first half of the Eastern League season, but this past week featured several encouraging individual performances from some of the Baltimore Orioles’ top prospects. While the wins were hard to come by, players such as Griff O’Ferrall, Dylan Beavers, Thomas Sosa, Willy Vasquez, and Juaron Watts-Brown provided plenty of reasons for Orioles fans to keep watching closely. Chesapeake entered the week near the bottom of the Southwest Division standings but continued developing talent that could eventually impact Baltimore.

Chesapeake Baysox at Altoona Curve

The Baysox wrapped up their road series against Altoona looking to salvage momentum before returning home.

Chesapeake struggled to contain the Curve offense throughout much of the series. Altoona’s lineup consistently pressured Baysox pitching, forcing Chesapeake to play from behind in several games. The Baysox offense flashed occasional power but could not string together enough big innings to overcome the deficit. Altoona’s strong offensive week helped them gain ground in the Eastern League standings while Chesapeake continued searching for consistency.

Top Baysox Performers

  • Griff O’Ferrall continued to show excellent bat-to-ball skills.
  • Thomas Sosa delivered quality at-bats near the top of the order.
  • Willy Vasquez remained one of Chesapeake’s most productive run producers.

Weekend Series Wrap-Up vs. Altoona

The road trip to Altoona proved challenging. Chesapeake’s pitching staff struggled to keep runners off base, while the offense often found itself needing late comebacks.

Despite the losses, several Orioles prospects continued making progress:

Griff O’Ferrall

The former Virginia standout has quietly become one of the Baysox’ most consistent players. O’Ferrall’s combination of contact ability, speed, and defensive versatility makes him one of the more intriguing middle infield prospects in the system.

Thomas Sosa

Sosa continued producing quality plate appearances and finding ways to get on base. The outfielder’s offensive development remains one of the more positive stories in Bowie this season.

Willy Vasquez

Vasquez has become one of Chesapeake’s most reliable RBI threats. His ability to drive runners home has been critical during a season where run production has often been difficult to find.

Juaron Watts-Brown

The right-hander continues flashing some of the best strikeout stuff in the Orioles system. Consistency remains the next step, but the talent is obvious every time he takes the mound.

Richmond Flying Squirrels at Chesapeake Baysox

The Baysox returned home to Prince George’s Stadium to begin a six-game series against Richmond.

Facing a division rival, Chesapeake hoped home field would help spark a turnaround. The offense generated several scoring opportunities, but timely hits remained elusive. Richmond capitalized on key moments while Chesapeake struggled to cash in runners in scoring position.

Richmond Flying Squirrels at Chesapeake Baysox

The middle game of the series featured another tightly contested matchup.

The Baysox pitching staff kept the game manageable, but Richmond’s bullpen limited Chesapeake’s opportunities late. Several young Orioles prospects continued showing flashes, though the Baysox once again found themselves needing more offensive support.

Thursday, June 18

Richmond Flying Squirrels 9, Chesapeake Baysox 4

Thursday’s contest started promisingly before Richmond gradually pulled away.

Juaron Watts-Brown turned in one of his better starts in recent weeks. The Orioles prospect worked five innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven. His fastball generated swings and misses throughout the outing, providing an encouraging sign after some recent struggles.

The biggest offensive highlight came from Griff O’Ferrall, who launched his fifth home run of the season. O’Ferrall’s continued development has been one of the brighter stories for Chesapeake this summer.

Dylan Beavers also began a rehab assignment and immediately showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks. Orioles fans will be closely monitoring Beavers’ progress as he works toward a return to full health.

Late RBI contributions from Willy Vasquez and Francisco Peguero helped Chesapeake narrow the margin, but Richmond had already built a comfortable lead.

Key Performers

  • Griff O’Ferrall: HR, continued hot stretch
  • Juaron Watts-Brown: 5 IP, 7 K
  • Dylan Beavers: Rehab debut
  • Francisco Peguero: 2 RBI
  • Willy Vasquez: RBI

Player of the Week: Griff O’Ferrall

If there was one Baysox player who stood out over the past seven days, it was Griff O’Ferrall.

The Orioles prospect continued showing why Baltimore selected him in the 2024 MLB Draft. O’Ferrall combined solid defense, contact hitting, speed, and surprising pop during the week. His home run against Richmond highlighted the continued growth in his offensive game.

What makes O’Ferrall particularly exciting is the complete package. The shortstop possesses:

  • Plus baseball instincts
  • Strong defensive reliability
  • Excellent contact skills
  • Above-average speed
  • Emerging power

The Orioles organization has emphasized athletic middle infielders throughout its system, and O’Ferrall fits that mold perfectly.

Prospect Stock Up

Dylan Beavers

Seeing Beavers return to game action is excellent news for the Orioles organization. The outfielder remains one of Baltimore’s most talented position prospects and should provide a major boost to Chesapeake’s lineup once fully healthy.

Juaron Watts-Brown

Seven strikeouts against Richmond demonstrated the upside that has scouts excited. If Watts-Brown can consistently command his fastball, his ceiling remains extremely high.

Francisco Peguero

The infielder continues producing quality at-bats and has become a reliable contributor offensively.

Looking Ahead

The Baysox continue their homestand against Richmond before turning their attention toward the final stretch of the first half. Chesapeake entered Friday with a 25-37 record and will be looking to build momentum heading into the second half of the Eastern League season.

While the wins have not always followed, the primary mission in Double-A remains player development. Orioles fans should continue watching O’Ferrall, Beavers, Watts-Brown, Thomas Sosa, Willy Vasquez, and several other prospects who could eventually find themselves climbing toward Norfolk and ultimately Baltimore.
