The Chesapeake Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-2 Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland. Chesapeake scored three runs in both the fourth and eighth innings, with Wehiwa Aloy’s two-run home run to left field highlighting the final frame.
The victory moved the Chesapeake Baysox to 26-19 in the second half and 55-58 overall. The Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles scored seven of the game’s final eight runs, while the Richmond Flying Squirrels entered the matchup as the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
Chesapeake Baysox Take Control in the Fourth
Richmond scored first in the second inning when a double steal brought Lisbel Diaz home from third base. Chesapeake tied the game in the third after Tavian Josenberger walked, reached third on a Colin Tuft single and scored when the Baysox grounded into a double play.
The Chesapeake Baysox then took a 4-1 lead against Richmond left-hander Greg Farone in the fourth inning. The first four Baysox batters reached, and the first three scored during the three-run frame.
Dom Keegan opened the inning with a double measured at 113 miles per hour, and Thomas Sosa reached after being hit by a pitch. Griff O’Ferrall followed with an RBI single that scored Keegan and gave Chesapeake the lead. Vance Honeycutt then singled to left field, bringing Sosa home for his first Double-A hit and RBI.
Wehiwa Aloy Delivers the Decisive Blow
Honeycutt finished his Chesapeake Baysox debut 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. He had stolen a team-high 28 bases for High-A Frederick earlier in the season before joining Chesapeake.
Richmond cut the deficit to 4-2 in the sixth inning when Charlie Szykowny hit a solo home run to right-center field. Left-hander Sebastian Gongora relieved Chesapeake starter Caden Hunter and recorded two strikeouts across three one-run innings.
The Chesapeake Baysox scored three times in the bottom of the eighth. Tuft’s RBI single to center field scored Honeycutt and gave Tuft his first Double-A RBI, while Tuft finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
A batter later, Aloy hit a two-run home run to left field for his fourth Double-A homer in 19 games. The blast gave Chesapeake a 7-2 lead and completed the team’s second three-run inning of the night.
Caden Hunter Earns the Victory
Hunter started for Chesapeake and earned the win after pitching five one-run innings with two strikeouts. He improved to 2-2 and stranded six Richmond runners, including four in scoring position.
Ryan Long faced the minimum in the ninth inning to close out the game. Farone took the loss for Richmond and fell to 5-10.
Samuel Basallo batted third, played nine innings at first base and continued an MLB rehab assignment. He went 0-for-5 and made a catch on a seventh-inning-ending lineout.
Chesapeake Baysox Continue Series Wednesday
The Chesapeake Baysox will continue their six-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Prince George’s Stadium. Joseph Dzierwa is scheduled to start for Chesapeake against Richmond right-hander Trystan Vrieling.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Dzierwa entered Wednesday with a 3-1 record and a 1.89 ERA, while Vrieling entered with a 5-2 record and a 4.34 ERA.

The Chesapeake Baysox erased Richmond’s early lead with a three-run fourth inning and added another three-run burst in the eighth. Hunter’s five one-run innings kept Chesapeake in position to take control, while Gongora and Long combined to finish the game.
Aloy supplied the defining hit with his eighth-inning home run, and Honeycutt contributed a hit, an RBI and two stolen bases in his Double-A debut. Tuft also recorded his first Double-A RBI as Chesapeake opened the series continuation with a 7-2 victory.
