Chesapeake Baseball Finishes 18-6-1 After State Semifinal Run

PASADENA, Md. — Chesapeake High School baseball put together one of the strongest spring seasons in Anne Arundel County, finishing 18-6-1 overall, 12-3 in region play, and reaching the MPSSAA Class 3A state semifinals before falling one run short against Stephen Decatur. The Cougars finished ranked No. 15 in Maryland on MaxPreps, scored 209 runs, allowed only 93, and went 9-1-1 at home, 5-4 on the road and 4-1 at neutral sites.

Chesapeake’s season ended May 19 at Joe Cannon Stadium, where the Cougars lost 3-2 to Stephen Decatur in the Class 3A state semifinals. MPSSAA listed the matchup as No. 1 Stephen Decatur vs. No. 4 Chesapeake-AA, showing how deep Chesapeake had pushed into the state tournament.

The Cougars’ year started rough with back-to-back losses to Archbishop Spalding, 16-1 on March 7 and 18-1 on March 9. Chesapeake responded the way good teams do. The Cougars beat Northeast 8-4, routed Meade twice by scores of 17-0 and 20-0, swept C. Milton Wright 5-0 and 5-2, then added strong county wins over Annapolis, Glen Burnie and Southern.

The biggest story was Chesapeake’s growth after the early March losses. The Cougars went 18-4-1 after the Spalding games, showing a team that adjusted, competed and became one of Class 3A’s final four teams. Chesapeake’s run included shutout wins over Meade, C. Milton Wright, Southern, Old Mill, South River, Patterson and Northeast.

Chesapeake’s offense had plenty of power across the lineup. The Cougars scored double-digit runs 12 times, including 20 against Meade, 17 against Meade, 17 against Old Mill, 12 against Southern, 12 against Annapolis Area Christian, 11 against Glen Burnie, 11 against Arundel, 11 against Northeast in the playoffs and 23 against Patterson.

The pitching and defense carried the same weight. Chesapeake allowed 93 runs in 25 games, an average of 3.72 runs allowed per game. The Cougars also posted eight shutouts, including three in the postseason: 23-0 over Patterson, 11-0 over Northeast and the earlier regular-season shutouts that helped build the record.

The playoff run was dominant before the semifinal. Chesapeake opened the MPSSAA Class 3A tournament with a 23-0 win over Patterson, then beat Northeast 11-0. The Cougars followed that with a major 7-2 win over Damascus to earn the state semifinal spot.

The Damascus win was one of Chesapeake’s best games of the season. Chesapeake beat Damascus 7-2, outhit the Swarmin’ Hornets 7-2, and scored in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Damascus entered that game with a strong record, but Chesapeake controlled the middle innings and pulled away.

The final game hurt because Chesapeake was right there. Stephen Decatur entered the semifinal with a 26-1 record, a No. 3 Maryland ranking and 317 runs scored, while Chesapeake entered at 18-5-1 with 207 runs scored before that game. Chesapeake still pushed Decatur to a one-run finish before falling 3-2.

Final takeaway

Chesapeake baseball’s season deserves a big recap because the Cougars did more than win games. They recovered from a tough start, dominated large stretches of county play, scored more than 200 runs, allowed fewer than 100, won three playoff games and reached the Class 3A state semifinals. The season ended one run short of the state championship game, but Chesapeake proved it belonged among Maryland’s best baseball programs in 2026.
