Capitals Re-Sign Devante Smith-Pelly to One Year Deal
DSP to Return to Stanley Cup Champion Capitals
The Washington Capitals and UFA Devante Smith-Pelly have come to terms on a 1 year, 1 million dollar deal as first reported by Pierre LeBrun. In the same report it was reported that he had been offered more money from other teams but preferred to take the hometown discount and re-sign with the Capitals.
Hearing that @smithpelly23 has agreed to return to the Caps on a one-year deal. Believe that he turned down more lucrative offers from two other teams but wanted to stay with the Cup champs who are tight vs the salary cap

This signing makes sense on both ends. It seemed as though Smith-Pelly stepped up when the Capitals needed him most particularly in the final two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, scoring a total of 7 goals during the entire run. Re-signing a gritty, skilled bottom 6 forward allows Washington to keep the depth that helped it secure its first championship in franchise history this year.
The signing also makes sense on Smith-Pelly’s end, considering he seemed to find his stride playing for the Capitals this postseason. Washington is his fourth team since entering the league in 2010 with the Anaheim Ducks, and at 25 it seems as though Smith-Pelly has finally found his home, even if he has to take a bit of a pay cut.
He had both a one-year offer and a two-year offer from 2 other teams that were worth more but like I said, wanted to stay with the Caps https://t.co/KzmXoZj7CM
