WIZARDS ACQUIRE FELIX OKPARA IN DRAFT-DAY TRADE

The Washington Wizards have acquired the rights to Felix Okpara after trading their No. 51 and No. 60 selections to move up to No. 46 overall, where the Orlando Magic initially made the selection. Washington immediately acquired his rights in a draft-night trade.

After selecting AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick and reportedly extending Trae Young, Washington has now added a defensive specialist to strengthen its frontcourt.

Who is Felix Okpara?

  • Position: Center/Forward
  • Height: 6-foot-11
  • Weight: 242 pounds
  • School: Tennessee (previously Ohio State)
  • Age: 22
  • Hometown: Nigeria

Okpara is widely regarded as one of the best defensive big men in this draft class. He spent two seasons at Ohio State before transferring to Tennessee, where he became the anchor of one of the SEC’s best defenses. He earned SEC All-Defensive Team honors and helped lead the Volunteers to another deep NCAA Tournament run.

2025-26 Tennessee Stats

  • 10.7 points per game
  • 6.3 rebounds
  • 1.5 blocks
  • Nearly 60% shooting from the field

Those numbers don’t jump off the page offensively, but they perfectly illustrate his role: protect the rim, rebound, finish lobs, and defend without needing plays called for him.

Strengths

Scouts consistently praise:

  • Elite rim protection
  • Excellent shot blocking
  • NBA-caliber size and length
  • Mobile enough to defend pick-and-rolls
  • Runs the floor well
  • High basketball IQ
  • Efficient finisher around the basket
  • Strong screener

Many evaluators believe his defense alone gives him a chance to stick in the NBA for years.

Weaknesses

The offensive game remains a work in progress.

Questions include:

  • Limited shooting range
  • Doesn’t create his own offense
  • Little passing ability
  • Not expected to become a featured scorer

Most projections see him becoming a rim-running backup center rather than a starting offensive weapon.

Why the Wizards Made This Trade

Washington needed another young center with defensive upside.

By packaging picks 51 and 60 to move up just five spots, the Wizards ensured they landed a player they clearly valued before another team could. Rather than taking two developmental flyers late in the second round, they consolidated those assets into one player with a defined NBA skill set.

How He Fits With Washington

The Wizards continue building a roster around athleticism, defense, and youth.

With AJ Dybantsa expected to become the franchise centerpiece and Trae Young providing elite playmaking, Okpara won’t be asked to score. Instead, he can:

  • Protect the rim
  • Set hard screens
  • Catch lobs
  • Rebound
  • Provide energy off the bench

That role could make him an ideal second-unit center.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

This won’t receive the headlines of drafting AJ Dybantsa, but it could become one of the sneakier moves of Washington’s draft.

Good rebuilding teams find role players in the second round, and Okpara has one elite NBA skill already: defense. Every contender needs a big man who blocks shots, rebounds, and doesn’t demand the basketball.

If his offensive game develops even slightly, Washington may have found a valuable rotation player for very little cost.

Grade: A-

The Wizards gave up two late second-round picks to move up for a player they clearly targeted. Okpara fills a need, brings NBA-ready defensive ability, and fits the long-term timeline of Washington’s rebuild.
