Baz Dominates Former Team as Orioles Beat Rays 6-1
The Baltimore Orioles continued their surge Tuesday night at Camden Yards with a crisp 6-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays behind a dominant outing from former Tampa Bay right-hander Shane Baz and another big swing from rookie catcher Samuel Basallo.
Baz looked completely in command against the organization that drafted and developed him. The right-hander attacked the strike zone all night, worked through traffic early and finished with seven innings, one earned run and a season-high nine strikeouts. Baltimore improved to four wins in its last five games while Tampa Bay dropped its third straight.
Tampa Bay struck first in the opening inning when Jonathan Aranda lined an RBI single to give the Rays a quick 1-0 lead. Baz settled immediately after that moment. Fastballs exploded at the top of the zone while the slider generated swing-and-miss after swing-and-miss. Rays hitters kept putting runners on base, but Baz controlled every jam with strikeouts and weak contact.
Baltimore answered in the second inning with aggressive pressure baseball. Defensive mistakes by Tampa Bay opened the door, and the Orioles capitalized immediately. Jackson Holliday delivered an RBI single after Baltimore loaded the bases, and Taylor Ward added a sacrifice fly as the Orioles grabbed a 3-1 lead.
The game belonged to Baz after that.
Every inning seemed sharper than the last. Tampa Bay put runners in scoring position in the third, but Baz elevated for key strikeouts and escaped cleanly. Former Orioles rival Chandler Simpson collected two hits, and Aranda finished with three, yet Baltimore’s starter never allowed the Rays to build momentum.
Then Basallo delivered the knockout punch.
With two runners aboard in the fifth inning, the 21-year-old catcher crushed a towering three-run homer to right-center field off Taj Bradley replacement Tyler Martin. The blast pushed the Orioles lead to 6-1 and sent Camden Yards into another roar during what has become a breakout stretch for one of baseball’s top young hitters.
Basallo finished 1-for-4 with the homer and three RBIs. The home run marked his eighth of the season and continued a scorching May at the plate.
Baltimore only managed seven hits overall, but the Orioles consistently forced Tampa Bay into mistakes. The Rays committed three errors and struggled defensively throughout the night. Every Orioles rally carried pressure, and Tampa Bay never recovered from the sloppy second inning.
The bullpen handled the rest cleanly. Grant Wolfram and Andrew Kittredge combined for two scoreless innings to close the win.
Tuesday’s victory carried extra significance for Baz. The Orioles acquired the hard-throwing right-hander from Tampa Bay during the offseason in one of the organization’s biggest moves in years. Baltimore immediately committed to him with a long-term extension, and nights like this show exactly why the front office believed he could anchor the rotation.
Now the Orioles suddenly carry momentum again.
Back-to-back emotional wins over the division-leading Rays have changed the energy around the club. Monday featured another dramatic walk-off from Colton Cowser. Tuesday featured dominant pitching and Basallo’s thunderous bat. Baltimore suddenly looks like a team starting to believe again.
