Basallo Goes Deep, Rogers and Orioles Pitching Staff Blank Reds 3-0 to Open Series

The Baltimore Orioles opened their three-game road series in Cincinnati with one of their cleanest victories of the season Friday night, defeating the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 behind timely hitting from rookie Samuel Basallo and another strong outing from Trevor Rogers.
Baltimore improved to 41-48 with its second straight victory, while the Reds dropped to 40-47 after being shut out for the seventh time this season.
Basallo Provides the Big Swing
The Orioles wasted little time getting on the board.
Baltimore scored its first run in the opening inning after Gunnar Henderson came home on a Cincinnati throwing error, giving the Orioles an early 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, one swing changed the game.
Rookie catcher Samuel Basallo crushed a two-run home run to right field, extending Baltimore’s advantage to 3-0. The blast was Basallo’s 13th homer of the season and continued what has been an impressive rookie campaign. The Orioles managed only a handful of hits the rest of the way, but Basallo’s power proved to be all the offense they would need.
Rogers Escapes Trouble
Trevor Rogers didn’t have his sharpest command, but he delivered exactly what Baltimore needed.
The left-hander worked five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four. Rogers walked five batters and repeatedly pitched out of jams, preventing Cincinnati from capitalizing despite several opportunities.
It marked Rogers’ third consecutive victory and another encouraging performance as he continues to stabilize the Orioles’ rotation during the second half of the season.
Bullpen Finishes the Job
Baltimore’s bullpen took over after Rogers exited and never allowed the Reds back into the game.
Rico Garcia navigated the middle innings before Yennier Cano delivered another scoreless appearance. Tyler Wells closed the door with a perfect ninth inning, earning his first save since 2023 after closer Ryan Helsley landed on the injured list with elbow discomfort.
The Orioles’ pitching staff combined on a four-hit shutout while stranding numerous Cincinnati baserunners throughout the night. The Reds finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
Missed Opportunities for Both Clubs
Despite the win, Baltimore’s offense wasn’t explosive.
The Orioles scored all three runs in the first three innings before being largely quiet against Cincinnati’s bullpen, collecting only one hit after the fifth inning. Fortunately for Baltimore, its pitchers and defense made the early lead stand up.
The Reds also struggled offensively, managing only four singles all night and never generating the big hit needed to climb back into the game.
MSB Take
The Orioles have struggled to find consistency throughout the 2026 season, but this was exactly the type of game they needed. Strong starting pitching, shutdown relief, clean defense, and one timely swing from Samuel Basallo were enough to secure a road victory.
Basallo continues to prove he belongs in the middle of Baltimore’s lineup, while Trevor Rogers has quietly put together one of his best stretches of the season. If the Orioles hope to climb back into the postseason conversation, performances like Friday night’s will have to become the norm.
Baltimore will look to secure the series Saturday as Kyle Bradish is scheduled to take the mound against the Reds.
