Early Deficit Sinks Navy Men’s Soccer in 2-0 Home-Opening Loss to George Washington

The Navy men’s soccer team controlled much of the second half and finished with advantages in shots and corner kicks, but two early George Washington goals proved too much to overcome in a 2-0 loss Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
The defeat dropped the Midshipmen to 0-2-1 through their first three matches under first-year head coach John Hackworth. George Washington improved to 2-1 with its second consecutive victory.
Navy outshot George Washington 10-7 and generated six corner kicks to the Revolutionaries’ five. However, the Midshipmen placed only three attempts on goal and could not solve GW goalkeeper Tom Macauley.
Macauley stopped all three shots he faced to record his second consecutive shutout and the eighth clean sheet of his collegiate career.
Revolutionaries Strike Early
George Washington took the lead just 2:53 into the match.
Tommaso Lami delivered a corner kick into the Navy penalty area, where defender Jake Poole rose to meet it. Poole directed a header past Navy goalkeeper Sam Clark for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Navy attempted to respond quickly. Keane Brown drove a long-range shot through traffic in the ninth minute, but Macauley handled it. Duncan Sullivan followed with another effort on target in the 12th minute, and Macauley again made the save.
Clark, making his first collegiate start in goal, recorded his first save in the 17th minute when he denied Axel Dickson.
A Navy turnover in its defensive end opened the door for George Washington’s second goal in the 23rd minute. Webb Kosich recovered the ball and helped move it to Jaden Dubon, who sent a cross toward Joe Brayson. Brayson found space in front of goal and finished the chance for his first career goal.
The assist gave Dubon a team-leading six points through George Washington’s first three matches.
Clark prevented the Revolutionaries from extending their lead moments later. Kosich received a point-blank opportunity in the 24th minute, but Clark turned it away to keep Navy within two goals.
Navy Begins to Apply Pressure
The Midshipmen settled into the match as the first half progressed. Nick Gallucci and team captain Nate Stewart each produced attempts before halftime, although neither shot reached Macauley.
Navy finished the first half even with George Washington at six shots apiece. The Revolutionaries’ advantage came from their efficiency, scoring twice on their first six attempts while placing four of them on goal.
Clark made another important save against Brayson in the 50th minute, and Navy took control of the possession and territory for much of the second half.
Cohen Nance generated an opportunity from close range in the 68th minute, but the George Washington defense blocked his attempt before it reached the goalkeeper.
Brown produced Navy’s most dangerous scoring chance one minute later. He connected on a one-time strike and sent a low shot toward the left side of the goal, but the ball traveled narrowly outside the post.
Gallucci nearly cut the deficit in half during the 80th minute. His one-time effort also went just left of the goal, allowing George Washington to maintain its shutout.
The Revolutionaries eventually regained possession over the closing minutes and prevented Navy from building another sustained attack.
Clark Steady in First Start
Although Navy conceded twice, Clark delivered a promising performance in his first collegiate start.
Clark played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves, including two stops from close range. His work after George Washington’s second goal prevented the match from getting out of reach and gave the Midshipmen an opportunity to mount their second-half push.
Gallucci led all players with three shots. Brown and Sullivan each registered two attempts, while Sullivan placed both of his shots on goal. Nance also attempted two shots.
Brown, Will Cawlfield, Luke Parker, Gallucci, Sullivan, Stewart, Jack Illig and Clark each played the full 90 minutes for Navy. Alex Galloway made his first appearance of the season off the bench.
Navy allowed George Washington only one shot during the second half. The Midshipmen also earned four of their six corner kicks after halftime, further reflecting the shift in possession and pressure.
Missed Opportunities Outweigh Second-Half Improvement
The Midshipmen showed a meaningful response after falling behind, especially defensively. Navy limited GW’s ability to counterattack and kept the Revolutionaries from recording another dangerous sequence over the final 45 minutes.
However, the opening 23 minutes decided the match. A poorly defended corner kick and a costly turnover gave George Washington the type of early opportunities that an experienced opponent will punish.
Navy also needed more precision around the penalty area. The Midshipmen produced 10 total shots but placed only three on frame. Their best two second-half opportunities missed narrowly, allowing Macauley to complete the shutout without making a save after halftime.
The result moved Navy’s all-time record against George Washington to 13-15-5. The Revolutionaries have now won three consecutive meetings in the series.
MSB Take
Navy’s second-half performance provided legitimate encouragement, but the Midshipmen cannot continue putting themselves in early holes. After surrendering seven goals in their season-opening loss at UC San Diego, Navy conceded twice in the first 23 minutes against George Washington.
The positive development was the response. Navy did not collapse after falling behind 2-0. The Midshipmen controlled much of the second half, outshot GW 4-1 after halftime and received a composed performance from Clark in his first collegiate start.
Hackworth is still establishing his system with a young roster, and early-season mistakes are understandable. However, Navy must turn its possession into better chances and force opposing goalkeepers to work more consistently. Ten shots will not mean much if only three reach the target.
There was progress in this loss, particularly in the second half. The next step is producing that same urgency from the opening whistle.
Navy was scheduled to continue its homestand against Presbyterian at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
