Carroll Community College women’s soccer opened its third season with a 3-1 road victory over Howard Community College on Aug. 25 in Columbia, Maryland. Jen Vasquez scored twice for Carroll, which led 2-0 at halftime before freshman Emerson Stoltzfus added the final goal. Carroll outshot Howard 27-6 and held a 22-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Jen Vasquez Scores Twice for Carroll Community College

Ava Wasowicz assisted on Carroll’s first goal in the 28th minute, when Vasquez opened the season’s scoring. Hannah Peterson then intercepted a Howard pass and found Vasquez, who scored again before halftime to give Carroll a two-goal lead.

Howard goalkeeper Sophia Newman made 18 saves in her collegiate debut. Carroll goalkeeper Emma Jewell made three saves, while the Carroll defense limited Howard’s opportunities.

Carroll Answers After Howard Goal

Howard cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the second half when Ashly Dominguez scored after a Carroll miscue. Carroll maintained pressure and restored its two-goal advantage when Stoltzfus converted a corner-kick opportunity.

The teams combined for 19 fouls. Carroll’s 22 shots on goal reflected its attacking pressure, while Howard finished with five shots on target.

Carroll Community College Schedule Update

Carroll entered the opener after all but one player from last season’s playoff squad had graduated. The team was scheduled to face CCBC Essex on Aug. 27, but severe weather postponed that match until Oct. 12 at Carroll.

Carroll was scheduled to return to action Sept. 1 at Prince George’s Community College. The victory gave Carroll a 1-0 start to its third season.

Maryland Sports Blog Take

Carroll Community College women’s soccer created a clear statistical advantage in its opener, finishing with 27 shots and 22 shots on goal. Vasquez provided the first-half scoring, and Stoltzfus answered Howard’s second-half goal with the decisive final score.

The result gave a largely new Carroll roster a strong start after significant losses from last season’s playoff team. The postponed match against CCBC Essex adds another scheduled home date on Oct. 12.
