Capitals Double Down on Development, Extend ECHL Partnership with South Carolina Stingrays

The Washington Capitals are keeping a key piece of their player development pipeline intact.

The organization announced it has signed a multi-year extension of its ECHL affiliation agreement with the South Carolina Stingrays, ensuring one of the NHL’s longest-running and most successful developmental partnerships will continue into the future. The agreement keeps the Capitals, the AHL’s Hershey Bears, and the Stingrays working together as a three-tier system that has consistently produced NHL talent and organizational depth.

For Washington, this move is about far more than paperwork. It reinforces a development model that has played an important role in building competitive teams for more than a decade.

A Proven Development Pipeline

The Capitals first partnered with the Stingrays from 2004-12 before renewing the relationship in 2014. Since then, South Carolina has become a vital stop for young prospects making the jump from junior hockey or college to professional hockey.

While elite prospects often begin their professional careers with Hershey, many players benefit from significant minutes in South Carolina before earning promotions to the Bears and eventually Washington.

That development ladder allows prospects to:

  • Adjust to the professional schedule.
  • Gain valuable special teams experience.
  • Play in key late-game situations.
  • Develop physically while receiving consistent coaching.

Instead of sitting in the press box, prospects receive meaningful ice time that accelerates their growth.

Winning Culture Matters

One reason Washington continues to invest in South Carolina is simple: the Stingrays know how to win.

Since joining forces with the Capitals, South Carolina has remained one of the ECHL’s premier franchises. The organization has reached the playoffs consistently and has built a reputation for developing players while competing for championships. The Stingrays are also one of the most decorated franchises in ECHL history, winning three Kelly Cup championships and reaching the Kelly Cup Final six times.

Winning environments matter for young players. Learning how to handle playoff pressure, road trips, and championship expectations helps prepare prospects for the demands of the NHL.

More Than Just Players

The partnership has also produced successful coaches.

Current Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery spent three seasons as head coach of the Stingrays from 2018-21, compiling an impressive record while establishing himself as one of hockey’s brightest young coaching minds before moving behind the Hershey Bears bench and eventually earning the Washington job.

Carbery’s path perfectly illustrates why the affiliation is so valuable. South Carolina serves as a proving ground not only for players but also for coaches and hockey operations personnel.

Benefits for Hershey

The extension also strengthens the Hershey Bears.

As the Capitals’ AHL affiliate, Hershey frequently experiences roster movement throughout the season due to NHL recalls and injuries. Having a trusted ECHL partner allows the Bears to replenish their lineup quickly with players who already understand the organization’s systems and expectations.

That continuity has helped Hershey remain one of the American Hockey League’s premier franchises while consistently competing for Calder Cup championships.

Looking Ahead

The Stingrays have already begun building their roster for the 2026-27 season by issuing qualifying offers and re-signing key contributors, providing a stable foundation for another competitive campaign.

As Washington continues transitioning toward its next generation of talent, the Capitals will rely heavily on prospects developing through Hershey and South Carolina before reaching the NHL.

The extension ensures that process remains uninterrupted.

MSB Take

This is one of those organizational moves that won’t generate national headlines, but it could have a significant impact on the Capitals’ future.

Successful NHL franchises are built through strong development systems, and Washington has one of the league’s best. Keeping South Carolina in the fold provides stability for prospects, coaches, and the entire organization while maintaining a winning culture from the ECHL all the way to the NHL.

With the Capitals looking to remain contenders while developing their next wave of talent, extending the partnership with the Stingrays is another smart move by Brian MacLellan and the front office. It’s a behind-the-scenes decision that should continue paying dividends for years to come.
