UMES Bowler Maria Beccera Diaz Strikes Gold at Colombian National Championships

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s nationally respected women’s bowling program continues to make its mark on the international stage.
UMES standout Maria Beccera Diaz added another impressive achievement to her growing résumé this summer, capturing a gold medal at the Colombian National Championships while representing her home country. The accomplishment further reinforces the caliber of talent within one of the premier collegiate bowling programs in the United States.
Competing against many of Colombia’s top bowlers, Beccera Diaz showcased the consistency, composure, and shot-making ability that have made her a key contributor for the Hawks. Winning a national championship is never easy, and doing so against the country’s elite bowlers demonstrates the experience and competitive edge she brings back to Princess Anne.
For UMES head coach Kayla Bandy and the Hawks, the victory is another example of the program’s international reach. Eastern Shore has long attracted elite bowlers from around the world, and Beccera Diaz’s championship adds another chapter to that tradition.
Building Momentum for the 2026-27 Season
The timing of the championship could not be better for UMES.
The Hawks enter another season with expectations of competing for MEAC championships and making another run toward the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship. Having one of their veteran bowlers return after winning a national title provides both confidence and valuable high-level competitive experience.
International competition often features unique lane conditions and intense pressure, making events like the Colombian Nationals excellent preparation for collegiate postseason play. The confidence gained from standing atop the podium can carry over throughout the upcoming NCAA season.
UMES Continues Bowling Excellence
Women’s bowling has become one of the flagship programs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The Hawks have built a national reputation through consistent NCAA Tournament appearances, conference championships, and producing bowlers who excel both collegiately and internationally.
Beccera Diaz’s latest accomplishment only strengthens that legacy.
Success on the international stage also highlights the program’s ability to develop athletes capable of competing against the best bowlers in the world while proudly representing both UMES and their home countries.
MSB Take
Championship programs aren’t built solely during the college season—they’re built year-round.
Maria Beccera Diaz spending her offseason competing at the highest level in Colombia and returning home with a national championship gold medal speaks volumes about her dedication. That experience should make an already talented UMES squad even stronger heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
For Maryland sports fans, it’s another reminder that one of the nation’s elite collegiate bowling programs resides right here on the Eastern Shore.
