Young Shines Again, Basallo’s Clutch Blast Lifts Orioles Past Royals 5-3

The Baltimore Orioles opened their three-game series against the Kansas City Royals with a hard-fought 5-3 victory Friday night at Camden Yards, riding another outstanding start from rookie right-hander Brandon Young and a game-changing eighth-inning home run from Samuel Basallo.
For much of the night, Young looked in complete control. The rookie continued his impressive stretch by working deep into the game, keeping Kansas City’s lineup off balance with a mix of well-located fastballs and secondary pitches. Young allowed three runs while striking out five, once again giving Baltimore exactly what it needed from the starting rotation.
The Orioles wasted little time getting on the board before Blaze Alexander extended the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Alexander’s blast gave Baltimore some breathing room and continued his recent offensive surge.
Kansas City refused to go away. The Royals chipped away with solo home runs from Jac Caglianone and Isaac Collins, with Collins tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning. The late homer erased Young’s lead, but it couldn’t overshadow another quality outing from one of Baltimore’s brightest young pitchers.
The Orioles answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning.
After Pete Alonso reached base to start the rally, Basallo stepped into the batter’s box and crushed a towering two-run home run that brought the Camden Yards crowd to its feet. The mammoth blast gave Baltimore a 5-3 lead for good and showcased once again why the rookie catcher is viewed as one of the organization’s cornerstone players.
Baltimore’s bullpen made sure the lead held. Rico Garcia recorded the final out of the eighth inning before Andrew Kittredge closed the door in the ninth, securing the Orioles’ victory and a strong start to the series.
The Orioles received contributions throughout the lineup, but Friday’s win belonged to two young stars. Alexander provided early offense, while Basallo delivered the biggest swing of the night with his clutch two-run homer.
MSB Take
Friday night’s victory was about much more than one win in July. It highlighted why Orioles fans have reason to be excited about both the present and the future of this ballclub.
Brandon Young continues to pitch like he belongs in Baltimore’s rotation for the long haul. Every time he takes the mound, he attacks hitters, limits damage, and gives the Orioles a legitimate chance to win. While the club has searched for consistency from other starters throughout the season, Young has quietly become one of the most reliable arms on the staff. There should be no question that he has earned an opportunity to remain in the rotation.
Basallo continues to show why he is considered one of baseball’s premier young talents. His eighth-inning home run wasn’t simply another statistic—it came in the biggest moment of the game and changed the outcome. Those are the swings that define future stars, and Basallo keeps delivering them.
The Orioles are still battling to climb back into the postseason race, but if Brandon Young continues to develop into a dependable starter and Samuel Basallo keeps emerging as a middle-of-the-order force, Baltimore has two foundational pieces capable of impacting this team for years to come. Friday night served as another reminder that the Orioles’ future remains incredibly bright.
