Hometown Dream Comes True: Former Maryland Forward Solomon Washington Signs with New Orleans Pelicans

For one former Maryland Terrapin, the path to professional basketball has led right back home.

Former Maryland forward Solomon Washington has signed a free-agent contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, giving the New Orleans native an opportunity to begin his NBA career with the franchise he grew up watching. Washington is expected to suit up for the Pelicans during the 2026 NBA Summer League as he looks to earn a roster spot or a two-way contract.

For Maryland fans, the signing is another example of the Terrapins continuing to produce NBA-caliber talent. Washington now joins former Terp Derik Queen in the Pelicans organization, creating an intriguing Maryland connection in New Orleans.

A Journey Back Home

Washington’s story comes full circle.

The 6-foot-7 forward grew up in New Orleans and starred at G.W. Carver High School, where he established himself as one of Louisiana’s premier prospects before beginning his college career at Texas A&M Aggies men’s basketball. After three seasons in College Station, Washington transferred to Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball alongside head coach Buzz Williams for the 2025-26 season.

Although Maryland endured a difficult season as a team, Washington quickly became one of the Terps’ most dependable and respected players.

A Bright Spot for the Terps

Washington played in 25 games during his lone season in College Park, making 22 starts while averaging:

  • 9.8 points per game
  • 9.2 rebounds per game
  • 1.0 assist per game
  • 1.1 steals per game

His rebounding ranked among the best in the Big Ten, while his relentless motor and defensive versatility made him one of Maryland’s emotional leaders. Washington routinely guarded multiple positions, battled on the glass, and often provided the energy that kept the Terps competitive despite injuries and roster changes throughout the season.

While his offensive game remains a work in progress—particularly his perimeter shooting—NBA scouts have long been intrigued by his athleticism, toughness, defensive instincts, and willingness to do the dirty work.

NBA Opportunity

Washington went undrafted during the 2026 NBA Draft but quickly found an opportunity with his hometown franchise.

The Pelicans reportedly hosted Washington for a pre-draft workout, and the organization clearly liked what it saw. Signing shortly after the draft gives Washington a chance to prove himself during Summer League before training camp begins.

Players with Washington’s skill set often carve out NBA careers through defense, rebounding, hustle plays, and positional versatility rather than scoring.

Those traits should give him every opportunity to compete for either a roster spot or a developmental role within New Orleans’ organization.

Maryland’s NBA Pipeline Continues

Washington’s signing continues Maryland’s recent success in sending players to the professional ranks.

The Pelicans have become something of a Terrapin destination after drafting Derik Queen in 2025, and now Washington will have the opportunity to reunite with another Maryland standout while chasing his NBA dream.

Even if Washington ultimately begins his professional career in the G League, the signing represents another success story for Buzz Williams’ program and a reminder that Maryland continues to develop players capable of reaching basketball’s highest level.

MSB Take

Not every NBA success story begins with hearing your name called on draft night.

Solomon Washington has built his career through relentless effort, elite rebounding, and a team-first mentality. Those qualities helped make him one of Maryland’s most respected players during the 2025-26 season, and they’re exactly the traits that NBA organizations value when filling out a roster.

There’s something fitting about a New Orleans kid getting his first professional opportunity with his hometown team. Now it’s up to Washington to make the most of it. If his work ethic at Maryland is any indication, don’t bet against him turning this opportunity into a long professional career.
