United States Beats Bosnia 2-0, Advances to World Cup Round of 16

The United States Men’s National Team kept its World Cup dream alive Wednesday night with a gritty 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.
The win sends the Americans into the Round of 16, where they will face Belgium. That matchup will bring back plenty of memories from the 2014 World Cup, but this U.S. team looks different. This group showed toughness, discipline and the ability to close out a knockout game under pressure.
Folarin Balogun opened the scoring late in the first half, and Malik Tillman put the match away with a beautiful free kick in the second half. Matt Freese also played a huge role in the win, making several important saves to keep Bosnia off the scoreboard.
The first half was not perfect for the United States, but the Americans stayed patient. Bosnia defended well and made the U.S. work for everything. Balogun had an earlier goal ruled out for offside, but the striker kept pushing and eventually broke through.
In the 45th minute, Balogun finished a chance just before halftime to give the United States a 1-0 lead. That goal changed the match. Instead of going into the break frustrated, the Americans went into halftime with momentum and control.
The second half brought plenty of drama. Balogun was shown a red card after a VAR review in the 64th minute, leaving the United States to finish the match with 10 men. That decision could have completely changed the game.
Instead, the U.S. responded like a team that belongs on this stage.
The back line stayed organized, Freese came up big when needed, and the midfield worked hard to protect the lead. Bosnia had more of the ball after the red card, but the United States did not break.
Tillman then delivered the knockout punch in the 82nd minute. The midfielder stepped up on a free kick and curled a great shot into the net to make it 2-0. It was a massive goal and one of the biggest moments of his career.
That goal ended Bosnia’s push and allowed the Americans to close out the win.
This was not just a flashy win. This was a professional knockout-stage performance. The United States had to deal with pressure, a red card and a desperate opponent. The Americans handled all of it.
Freese deserves a lot of credit. The U.S. goalkeeper looked calm and confident all night. His saves gave the team a chance to settle into the match early and protected the lead late.
Balogun was also excellent before the red card. The red card will be the talking point, especially because it means he will miss the next match against Belgium, but his goal was huge. The United States needed someone to finish a chance, and Balogun did exactly that.
Tillman may have had the biggest moment of the night. His free kick gave the U.S. breathing room and showed why he can be such an important player for this team. In a knockout game, special moments matter, and Tillman gave the Americans one.
The U.S. now turns its attention to Belgium. That will be a major test, especially without Balogun. The Americans will need another strong defensive effort and more creativity from players like Christian Pulisic, Tillman and the rest of the attack.
Still, this win should give the United States confidence.
The Americans did not just survive. They made a statement. They won a knockout game, kept a clean sheet and showed the toughness needed to advance in a World Cup.
This was the kind of win that can bring a team together.
MSB Take: This was a grown-up win for the United States. The Americans were not perfect, but they were tough, organized and dangerous when it mattered. Losing Balogun for the Belgium match hurts, but this team showed enough fight Wednesday night to believe it can keep going.
