Wizards Re-Sign Jamir Watkins to Two-Way Contract, Keeping Young Defensive Wing in Washington

The Washington Wizards have decided they weren’t ready to part ways with Jamir Watkins after all.
Just days after declining Watkins’ $2.15 million team option, Washington announced Wednesday that the 24-year-old wing has re-signed with the organization on a two-way contract. The move allows the Wizards to retain one of their young developmental pieces while preserving roster flexibility as the franchise continues its rebuild.
The decision comes after Watkins showed flashes during his rookie campaign, particularly on the defensive end, and gives him another opportunity to prove he belongs on a full-time NBA roster.
A Change of Direction
Initially, it appeared the Wizards were moving on from Watkins when they declined his team option. That decision sparked speculation that the former Florida State standout would become an unrestricted free agent and continue his career elsewhere.
Instead, Washington found a middle ground.
By signing Watkins to a two-way contract, the Wizards can continue developing him between the NBA club and the G League while keeping financial flexibility for additional roster moves throughout the offseason.
It’s a low-risk move with potentially significant upside.
Rookie Season Showed Promise
Watkins averaged:
- 7.4 points per game
- 3.9 rebounds per game
While those numbers won’t jump off the page, they only tell part of the story.
Throughout the season, Watkins earned praise for his defensive effort, athleticism, and willingness to guard multiple positions. At 6-foot-7 with good length and physicality, he has the tools to become the type of versatile wing every NBA team covets.
Offensively, Watkins remains a work in progress. Developing a more consistent outside shot and improving his decision-making with the ball will likely determine whether he eventually earns a standard NBA contract.
Defensive Identity Fits the Rebuild
Washington has made it clear that building a defensive identity is a priority under its current front office.
Watkins fits that vision.
His energy, hustle, rebounding from the wing position, and defensive versatility make him an intriguing developmental piece. While his offensive game still needs refinement, players who embrace defense often find opportunities in today’s NBA.
The Wizards evidently believe his best basketball is still ahead of him.
Why a Two-Way Deal Makes Sense
A two-way contract gives Washington flexibility while allowing Watkins to receive significant playing time in the G League.
Instead of spending long stretches at the end of the NBA bench, Watkins can continue playing meaningful minutes, refining his offensive skills, and remaining ready whenever injuries or roster needs create an opportunity.
For a rebuilding franchise, that’s an ideal scenario.
The Wizards avoid committing a full roster spot while keeping a player they still value in the organization.
MSB Take
This is a smart move by Washington.
Declining Watkins’ option initially looked like the end of his tenure with the Wizards, but bringing him back on a two-way contract is a win for both sides.
Watkins gets another chance to prove he belongs in the NBA, while the Wizards retain a young, athletic defender without sacrificing roster flexibility. Players with Watkins’ defensive potential don’t always develop overnight, and Washington is wisely giving him more time.
If Watkins can improve his perimeter shooting and become a more reliable offensive contributor, don’t be surprised if he earns a standard NBA contract before the end of the season.
For a rebuilding team, these are exactly the types of calculated bets worth making.
