The 2026 season will go down as one of the finest in Morgan State women’s tennis history.
The Bears finished the year with a 15-7 overall record, captured the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship, and earned the program’s second-ever NCAA Tournament berth. Morgan State’s championship run marked its first conference title since 2018 and cemented the Bears as one of the premier tennis programs in the MEAC.
Season Overview
Morgan State entered the spring with high expectations after returning a veteran lineup that featured experience at every singles position. The Bears rewarded that confidence by putting together one of the strongest regular seasons in school history.
Throughout the regular season, Morgan State posted a 15-6 mark before entering postseason play. The Bears collected key MEAC victories over South Carolina State (5-2), Delaware State (6-1), Howard (5-2) and Coppin State while battling conference rival North Carolina Central in a narrow 4-3 loss that would later serve as motivation entering the conference tournament.
Head coach Matthew Townes guided the team through a demanding schedule that included regional opponents from several conferences. By the end of the regular season, Morgan State had established itself as a legitimate championship contender.

She earned All-Tournament honors at No. 1 singles while also teaming with Julia Jeffrey for All-Tournament recognition at No. 2 doubles.
Tyler Williams
Williams became one of the Bears’ most reliable singles players.
She earned All-Tournament honors at No. 5 singles and entered the NCAA Tournament riding a 13-match winning streak, one of the longest active streaks in program history.
Lauryn Hall
Hall anchored the lower portion of the lineup and received All-Tournament recognition after another strong postseason performance.
NCAA Tournament
Morgan State’s championship earned a first-round matchup with No. 8 seed NC State in Raleigh.
Facing one of the nation’s elite programs, the Bears fell 5-0 to the Wolfpack. Although the season ended there, simply reaching the NCAA Tournament represented another major milestone for the program.
NC State eventually advanced deeper into the national tournament, underscoring the challenge Morgan State faced in the opening round.
