Delmarva Shorebirds Weekly Recap: Strong Start Gives Way to Tough Road Stretch

The Delmarva Shorebirds entered the second half of the Carolina League season looking to build momentum after a competitive first half, and for three games it appeared they had done exactly that. Delmarva opened the week by winning two of three against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans before traveling south to take on the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. While the Shorebirds struggled to contain one of the league’s hottest offenses during the road trip, there were still plenty of encouraging performances from both the lineup and pitching staff as the Orioles’ Single-A affiliate continued its development throughout the long season.
Delmarva finished the week 2-4, showing flashes of the balanced baseball that helped the club remain competitive throughout the first half. Timely hitting, aggressive baserunning and several quality pitching performances highlighted the two victories, while late-inning struggles and missed scoring opportunities proved costly during the three-game skid against Fayetteville. Official game stories and box scores reflected a team capable of competing nightly despite the challenging finish to the week.

June 19: Shorebirds Open the Second Half with an 8-4 Victory
Delmarva wasted little time putting the first-half schedule behind it by opening the second half with an impressive 8-4 victory over Myrtle Beach.
The offense established control early by consistently putting runners on base and forcing the Pelicans’ pitching staff to work from the stretch throughout the evening. Rather than relying on one big inning, the Shorebirds manufactured offense with quality at-bats, productive outs and timely extra-base hits.
The middle of the lineup provided the biggest spark. Multiple hitters collected multi-hit performances while the offense capitalized on several scoring opportunities with runners in scoring position. Delmarva also applied pressure on the bases, taking extra bases whenever possible and forcing Myrtle Beach into difficult defensive situations.
The pitching staff responded with one of its more complete efforts of the week. The starter gave the club valuable early innings before turning the game over to the bullpen, which protected the lead despite a late Pelicans rally. The relievers limited damage, recorded key strikeouts and prevented Myrtle Beach from mounting a serious comeback.
Defensively, Delmarva played clean baseball. Routine plays were converted into outs, double-play opportunities were finished efficiently and the club avoided giving the Pelicans additional chances through defensive mistakes.
Opening the second half with a victory immediately gave the Shorebirds positive momentum.
June 20: Delmarva Dominates 8-1
The Shorebirds followed Friday’s victory with arguably their most complete performance of the week, defeating Myrtle Beach 8-1.
Everything worked for Delmarva.
The starting pitcher attacked hitters from the opening inning, consistently getting ahead in counts and forcing weak contact. The defense backed him with several strong plays, allowing the pitching staff to work efficiently through the lineup.
Meanwhile, the offense continued its patient approach. The Shorebirds consistently reached base, extended innings and forced the Pelicans into high pitch counts. Extra-base hits helped stretch the lead while productive situational hitting allowed Delmarva to score without always relying on home runs.
The bullpen finished the final innings by limiting hard contact and preserving another convincing victory.
After winning the first two games of the series by a combined score of 16-5, the Shorebirds looked poised to carry significant momentum into the remainder of the road trip.
June 21: Myrtle Beach Avoids the Sweep
Looking to complete a three-game sweep, Delmarva instead ran into a determined Myrtle Beach club that earned a 7-2 victory.
Unlike the previous two games, the Shorebirds struggled to generate consistent offense. While Delmarva managed to put runners on base throughout the afternoon, timely hits proved difficult to find. Several promising innings ended with runners stranded, allowing Myrtle Beach to slowly build separation on the scoreboard.
The Pelicans capitalized on several scoring opportunities during the middle innings while their pitching staff settled into a rhythm after an early challenge from the Shorebirds lineup.
Although Delmarva battled until the final out, the offense never found the sustained rally that had defined the first two games of the series.
Even with the loss, taking two of three from Myrtle Beach represented a successful opening weekend to begin the second half.
Road Trip Begins
Following an off day, Delmarva traveled to Fayetteville to begin a difficult series against one of the Carolina League’s hottest clubs.
The Woodpeckers entered the week playing outstanding baseball and quickly demonstrated why they have become one of the league’s most dangerous offensive teams.
June 23: Woodpeckers Strike Early in 9-1 Loss
Fayetteville opened the series with a convincing 9-1 victory.
The game remained competitive through the early innings before the Woodpeckers’ offense erupted. Fayetteville used a powerful middle portion of the game to break the contest open, highlighted by a stretch of consecutive home runs that completely changed the game’s momentum.
Delmarva’s pitching staff battled throughout the evening, but the Woodpeckers consistently delivered timely hits with runners aboard.
Offensively, the Shorebirds struggled to sustain rallies against Fayetteville’s pitching staff. While Delmarva managed several scoring opportunities, the club was unable to string together enough quality at-bats to erase the growing deficit.
Despite the lopsided final score, several young players continued to battle through every inning, refusing to let the game completely get away.
June 24: Late Rally Sends Fayetteville to Another Victory
Wednesday’s contest was significantly closer than the final score suggested.
The Shorebirds remained within striking distance for most of the evening before Fayetteville scored four runs during the eighth inning to secure a 6-2 victory.
Delmarva’s pitching staff kept the game manageable through seven innings, allowing the offense multiple opportunities to climb back into contention. Unfortunately, the Shorebirds could not deliver the timely hit needed to even the score.
The late inning proved decisive as Fayetteville took advantage of several baserunners and extended its lead beyond reach.
Although disappointed with the result, Delmarva continued to compete hard through the ninth inning.
June 25: Fayetteville Completes Third Straight Win
The Woodpeckers finished their strong week by defeating Delmarva 5-1.
Unlike Tuesday’s slugfest, Thursday developed into a pitchers’ duel during the early innings.
The Shorebirds remained within striking distance before Fayetteville gradually pulled away with timely offense and effective bullpen work.
Delmarva continued to put runners aboard but again struggled to convert opportunities into runs. Several innings ended with traffic on the bases, allowing the Woodpeckers to maintain control throughout the evening.
The bullpen settled down during the later innings, but the offense could not overcome the deficit.
Team Trends
Although the Shorebirds finished the week 2-4, several positives stood out.
The club scored 16 runs during its first two victories, demonstrating the offensive potential that exists throughout the lineup. Delmarva also continued to play fundamentally sound baseball, showing aggressive baserunning and generally solid defensive play.
The biggest challenge came against Fayetteville, where the Shorebirds struggled to deliver timely hits while facing one of the league’s better pitching staffs. Limiting big innings also became an issue during the road series as the Woodpeckers repeatedly capitalized on momentum swings.
Transactions
Delmarva experienced the normal organizational movement expected throughout the Orioles’ farm system as players continued moving between affiliates. The Shorebirds adjusted their roster accordingly while maintaining a competitive lineup throughout the week. No major organizational changes significantly altered the everyday roster during this stretch.
Player of the Week
The honor goes to the Shorebirds’ offense as a group.
During the opening two victories over Myrtle Beach, Delmarva consistently produced quality at-bats from top to bottom. The lineup combined patience, aggressive baserunning and timely hitting to score 16 runs over two games while giving the pitching staff comfortable leads to protect.
Looking Ahead
While the week ended with three consecutive losses, Delmarva’s opening series against Myrtle Beach showed exactly what this club can become when every phase of the game comes together. Consistent pitching, opportunistic offense and fundamentally sound defense remain the formula for success as the Shorebirds continue the second half.
If the club can rediscover the offensive rhythm displayed during the first two games of the week while tightening late-inning execution on the mound, Delmarva has every opportunity to quickly return to the win column. The season remains a marathon, and the lessons learned during the challenging Fayetteville series should help the Shorebirds as they continue developing both individually and collectively throughout the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
