Orioles Blow Late Lead, Fall 6-5 to Dodgers in Walk-Off Heartbreaker

The Baltimore Orioles were six outs away from an impressive road victory Friday night at Dodger Stadium. Instead, a ninth-inning collapse and a costly defensive mistake turned a potential statement win into a frustrating 6-5 loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Baltimore entered the ninth inning leading 5-3 after battling back from an early deficit, but the Dodgers scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to steal the opener of the weekend series. The loss dropped the Orioles to 35-42 on the season, while Los Angeles improved to 49-27 and extended its winning streak to four games.

Dodgers Jump Out Early

Los Angeles struck first against Orioles starter Trey Gibson.

Max Muncy delivered a two-run single in the first inning, and Andy Pages added an RBI double in the second to give the Dodgers a 3-0 advantage. Gibson settled in after the rocky start, keeping Baltimore within striking distance despite the early damage.

Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki dominated the Orioles through the first five innings. After Taylor Ward’s leadoff single in the first, Sasaki retired 13 consecutive Baltimore hitters and appeared headed for another strong outing.

Orioles Finally Break Through

The game changed dramatically in the sixth inning.

With two outs, Gunnar Henderson launched a towering two-run home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Moments later, Pete Alonso followed with a solo blast of his own, tying the game at 3-3 and ending Sasaki’s night.

The back-to-back home runs energized Baltimore’s dugout and shifted momentum completely.

Henderson’s homer was his 16th of the season, while Alonso connected for his 17th.

Jeremiah Jackson Delivers the Big Hit

The Orioles continued their rally in the seventh inning.

Colton Cowser and Coby Mayo opened the frame with singles before Jackson Holliday worked a walk to load the bases. Jeremiah Jackson then lined a two-run single through the right side, scoring Cowser and Mayo and giving Baltimore a 5-3 lead.

At that point, the Orioles had erased a three-run deficit and appeared positioned to secure a quality win against one of baseball’s best teams.

Baltimore’s bullpen helped preserve the lead through the seventh and eighth innings, with Andrew Kittredge, Tyler Wells, and Yennier Cano combining to keep Los Angeles off the scoreboard.

Ninth-Inning Disaster

Everything unraveled in the bottom of the ninth.

Ryan Helsley entered looking for the save but immediately found trouble. Mookie Betts cut the lead to 5-4 with a solo home run, putting pressure on Baltimore’s defense and bullpen.

With two outs and two strikes later in the inning, Dodgers rookie Dalton Rushing delivered the biggest hit of the game, lining a single to right field that tied the score at 5-5.

The nightmare worsened on the same play.

Tyler O’Neill’s throw from right field sailed past home plate, allowing Ryan Ward to score the winning run and complete a stunning Dodgers comeback. What should have been extra innings instead became a walk-off loss for Baltimore.

Helsley was charged with the loss and his first blown save of the season. Blake Treinen earned the victory for Los Angeles.

Key Orioles Performers

Gunnar Henderson

  • 1-for-4
  • Two-run home run (16th)
  • 2 RBIs

Henderson’s sixth-inning blast ignited Baltimore’s comeback and continues his strong offensive season.

Pete Alonso

  • Solo home run (17th)

Alonso immediately followed Henderson’s homer with a game-tying shot.

Jeremiah Jackson

  • Two-run single in the seventh
  • Gave Baltimore its first lead of the night

Jackson’s clutch hit appeared to be the game winner until the Dodgers’ late rally.

Colton Cowser and Coby Mayo

Both reached base to spark the seventh-inning rally and eventually scored on Jackson’s hit.

Trey Gibson’s Start

Despite allowing three early runs, Gibson kept Baltimore in the game.

The young right-hander worked five innings and prevented the Dodgers from turning their early offensive pressure into a blowout. Gibson gave the Orioles a chance to rally, and the offense rewarded that effort later in the game.

Final Thoughts

This one will sting.

Baltimore fought back from a 3-0 deficit, chased one of baseball’s most talented young pitchers, and carried a two-run lead into the ninth inning against a powerhouse Dodgers club. The Orioles received big swings from Henderson and Alonso and a clutch hit from Jackson, but a late bullpen breakdown and defensive miscue spoiled the comeback effort.

The Orioles will look to bounce back Saturday night as they continue their three-game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Final Score: Dodgers 6, Orioles 5.
