Baltimore Native Alex Freeman Represents Maryland on Soccer’s Biggest Stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has brought the world’s biggest sporting event to North America, and while fans across Maryland are focused on Team USA’s quest for a deep tournament run, one player on the U.S. Men’s National Team roster has a direct connection to the Free State.

Defender Alex Freeman was born in Baltimore before his family relocated to Florida, and now the 21-year-old finds himself representing the United States on soccer’s biggest stage. After a meteoric rise through Orlando City’s academy system, Major League Soccer, and eventually Spain’s top division with Villarreal CF, Freeman has become one of the most intriguing young defenders in American soccer.

For Maryland soccer fans, Freeman’s story is a reminder that world-class talent can come from Baltimore and eventually reach the highest levels of international competition.

From Baltimore to the World Cup

Freeman was born on Aug. 9, 2004, in Baltimore, Maryland. His family later moved to South Florida, where he developed into one of the nation’s top youth soccer prospects. Despite leaving Maryland at a young age, Baltimore remains part of his story and identity.

Athletic excellence runs in the family.

His father, Antonio Freeman, starred for the Green Bay Packers, earned Pro Bowl honors, won a Super Bowl, and became one of the most recognizable wide receivers of his era. Yet instead of following the football path, Alex gravitated toward soccer.

That decision has paid off in remarkable fashion.

At 6-foot-2 with exceptional speed, strength, and technical ability, Freeman developed into a modern attacking fullback capable of impacting games on both ends of the field. His combination of athleticism and tactical awareness quickly attracted attention throughout the U.S. Soccer system.

Climbing the Orlando City Pipeline

Freeman’s rise was not the traditional overnight success story.

He spent years working through the youth ranks, first with Weston FC before joining Orlando City’s academy. There, he helped the club win major youth honors while establishing himself as one of the top young defenders in the country.

His development continued through Orlando City B, where he logged dozens of professional appearances and gained valuable experience against older competition. Rather than being rushed, Freeman gradually built his game and earned every promotion along the way.

That patience paid dividends.

By 2025, Freeman had become a regular contributor for Orlando City’s first team and emerged as one of Major League Soccer’s brightest young talents. His performances caught the attention of U.S. national team scouts and European clubs alike.

A Move to Spain

Freeman’s breakout season led to an opportunity few American players receive.

In January 2026, Villarreal CF of Spain’s La Liga acquired Freeman, making a significant investment in the young defender. Reports indicated the transfer could ultimately exceed $7 million with incentives, highlighting just how highly the Spanish club valued his potential.

The move represented another major step in his development.

Instead of remaining comfortable in MLS, Freeman chose to challenge himself against some of the best players in the world. Playing in La Liga provides weekly tests against elite competition and has accelerated his growth heading into the World Cup.

For American soccer fans, the move signaled that Freeman was becoming more than a prospect.

He was becoming a player capable of helping the national team compete on the global stage.

Earning a Spot on Team USA

Making a World Cup roster is never easy.

Making one at age 21 is even more impressive.

Freeman entered the national team picture in 2025 and quickly established himself as a trusted option for manager Mauricio Pochettino. His versatility, defensive reliability, and ability to get forward made him a valuable piece of the roster.

When the United States announced its final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Freeman’s name was included.

The selection made him one of the youngest players on the roster and completed an incredible rise from academy prospect to World Cup participant in just a few short years.

Orlando City officials noted that Freeman became the first player in club history to progress through the academy, MLS NEXT Pro, MLS, and ultimately the World Cup.

Making an Impact in the World Cup

Freeman wasted little time proving he belonged.

The United States opened the tournament with a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay, one of the best World Cup performances in program history. Multiple national outlets praised Freeman’s composure and effectiveness during his World Cup debut, calling him one of the unsung heroes of the victory.

Playing under the immense pressure of a home World Cup, Freeman showed maturity well beyond his age.

Rather than looking overwhelmed, he appeared comfortable.

Rather than playing cautiously, he played confidently.

Those qualities have helped make him one of the most exciting young players in the American player pool.

What Makes Freeman Special?

Several traits separate Freeman from many young defenders.

Athleticism

Few defenders possess his combination of size, speed, and explosiveness. At 6-foot-2, he can handle aerial battles while also keeping pace with fast attackers.

Versatility

Freeman can play right back, wingback, and even in a back three. That flexibility gives coaches numerous tactical options.

Attacking Ability

Modern soccer demands defenders who contribute offensively. Freeman’s runs down the flank and ability to join attacks make him dangerous in transition.

Maturity

Despite his age, coaches and teammates consistently praise his professionalism and composure. Those characteristics have helped him earn trust quickly at every level.

Maryland’s Place in the Story

Maryland has a rich soccer tradition.

The state has produced numerous collegiate stars, professional players, and national team contributors over the years. Programs such as the University of Maryland have long served as pipelines to the professional ranks.

Now, Alex Freeman adds another chapter to that history.

While most of his development occurred in Florida, his Baltimore roots provide Maryland soccer fans with a hometown connection to Team USA’s World Cup journey.

As millions of Americans watch the United States compete throughout the tournament, Maryland can proudly claim one of the roster’s rising stars.

Looking Ahead

At just 21 years old, Freeman’s story is only beginning.

Many defenders do not reach their peak until their late twenties. If his current development continues, Freeman could become a cornerstone of the U.S. national team for the next decade.

The 2030 World Cup could find him entering his prime.

European success with Villarreal could open doors to even bigger clubs.

Additional international tournaments could elevate him into one of the most recognizable American soccer players of his generation.

For now, however, the focus remains on helping the United States make a memorable run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

And as Team USA pursues that dream, a Baltimore native will be right in the middle of the action.

For Maryland soccer fans, that makes every match a little more personal.
