Orioles vs. Padres Series Preview: Machado Returns to Baltimore as Orioles Look to Keep Momentum Rolling

The Baltimore Orioles return to Camden Yards this weekend riding the momentum of back-to-back victories and a series split against the American League West-leading Seattle Mariners. After snapping a four-game losing streak, Baltimore now faces another tough challenge when the San Diego Padres come to town for a three-game interleague series beginning Friday night.

This matchup features plenty of star power, including the return of former Orioles superstar Manny Machado, while also providing Baltimore with an opportunity to gain ground in the American League standings against a Padres club that has hit a rough patch over the past three weeks. The Orioles swept San Diego in California last season and will look to continue that success at home.

Recent Momentum Favors Baltimore

The Orioles enter the series after defeating Seattle 7-5 on Thursday night. Adley Rutschman returned from a hamstring injury and immediately made an impact, driving in three runs. Pete Alonso launched a mammoth home run while Colton Cowser continued his hot stretch with another long ball.

Baltimore scored seven runs despite collecting only seven hits, showing an ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Tyler Wells stabilized the game with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Andrew Kittredge recorded his first save of the season.

The Orioles have now won two consecutive games and appear to be getting healthier at exactly the right time.

Series Schedule and Probable Pitching Matchups

Game 1 — Friday

Padres: Griffin Canning (0-4, 6.34 ERA) Orioles: Shane Baz (3-6, 4.09 ERA)

Friday’s opener presents Baltimore with a favorable pitching matchup.

Baz has emerged as arguably the Orioles’ most dependable starter over the past month. His strikeout ability and improved command have allowed him to keep Baltimore in nearly every outing. Camden Yards has also treated him well this season.

Canning has struggled throughout 2026. The veteran right-hander remains in search of his first victory and enters the game carrying a 6.34 ERA. Opposing hitters have consistently made hard contact against him, making this a game Baltimore’s offense should target early.

Advantage: Orioles

Game 2 — Saturday

Padres: Randy Vásquez (5-4, 3.63 ERA) Orioles: Trey Gibson (1-1, 4.24 ERA)

Saturday may be the most evenly matched game of the series.

Vásquez has quietly become one of San Diego’s most reliable starters. While some advanced metrics suggest he has benefited from favorable luck, his results have been difficult to ignore.

Gibson continues to impress during his rookie campaign. The young right-hander has shown poise beyond his years and has given Baltimore quality innings in several recent starts.

This game could ultimately come down to which bullpen performs better in the late innings.

Slight Advantage: Padres

Game 3 — Sunday

Padres: Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.33 ERA) Orioles: Trevor Rogers (3-6, 6.15 ERA)

The finale features two pitchers trying to find consistency.

Buehler no longer resembles the Cy Young contender he once was, but he has shown signs of improvement recently. Rogers, meanwhile, continues searching for answers after an up-and-down first half.

If Baltimore can force Buehler out early and attack the Padres bullpen, the Orioles will have an opportunity to win the series finale.

Advantage: Padres

Orioles Players to Watch

Pete Alonso

Alonso has become the centerpiece of Baltimore’s offense. The veteran slugger homered against Seattle and continues to provide middle-of-the-order power. When Alonso is driving the baseball, the Orioles lineup becomes significantly more dangerous.

Adley Rutschman

Baltimore’s franchise catcher looked completely healthy during his return Thursday. His three-RBI performance reminded everyone why he remains one of the most important players on the roster. The Orioles are a different team when Rutschman is producing offensively.

Colton Cowser

Cowser has been one of Baltimore’s hottest hitters in recent weeks. His power production has increased dramatically, and he continues to provide quality defense in the outfield. The Orioles need him to continue producing near the top of the lineup.

Gunnar Henderson

Although Henderson has experienced some inconsistency this season, few players on the roster possess his ability to change a game with one swing. A big series from Henderson could be the difference between winning and losing the weekend.

Padres Players to Watch

Fernando Tatis Jr.

Tatis remains the most dangerous player in San Diego’s lineup. The Padres believe his power stroke is beginning to return after a slow stretch, and Baltimore’s pitching staff must avoid allowing him to get comfortable early in counts.

Luis Arraez

Few hitters in baseball make as much contact as Arraez. He sets the table for the middle of the order and can create scoring opportunities simply by putting the ball in play.

Jackson Merrill

The young outfielder has become one of San Diego’s emerging stars. Merrill combines power, speed, and athleticism and has been among the Padres’ most productive offensive players.

Manny Machado

No player will receive more attention this weekend than Machado.

The former Orioles superstar spent seven seasons in Baltimore, earning four All-Star selections and establishing himself as one of the best players in franchise history. While 2026 has been a difficult season by Machado’s standards, he still enters the series with 11 home runs and 34 RBIs. Camden Yards has historically brought out the best in him, making him one of the biggest threats Baltimore will face this weekend.

Former Orioles Connections

Unlike some recent opponents, San Diego does not feature a large collection of former Orioles.

The biggest connection is unquestionably Manny Machado. His departure following the 2018 season marked the end of an era in Baltimore, and every return trip to Camden Yards remains a major storyline.

Keys to the Series

Win Friday Night

Baltimore has a significant advantage with Shane Baz facing Griffin Canning. Taking the opener would immediately put pressure on a struggling Padres team.

Keep Tatis Quiet

When Tatis gets on base, San Diego’s entire offense becomes more dangerous. Baltimore pitchers must limit his opportunities to impact the game.

Continue the Power Surge

Alonso, Cowser, Henderson, and Rutschman have shown the ability to score quickly through the long ball. Baltimore’s offense should be aggressive against a Padres pitching staff that has struggled recently.

Make the Padres Press

San Diego has dropped 12 of its last 16 games after a strong start to the season. If Baltimore can jump ahead early, frustration could quickly become a factor for the visitors.

Prediction

The Padres still possess enough talent to be dangerous, but Baltimore enters the weekend playing better baseball and with a healthier lineup.

Shane Baz gives the Orioles an excellent opportunity to capture the opener, while the return of Adley Rutschman provides another boost to an offense that has started to heat up.

Expect a competitive series, but Baltimore’s recent momentum and home-field advantage should be enough.

Prediction: Orioles win the series, 2-1.
