Norfolk Tides Weekly Recap: June 5-11, 2026
Tommy Pham Delivers, Creed Willems Keeps Raking, and Orioles Prospects Continue Development in a Busy Week

The Norfolk Tides continued their 2026 season with another eventful week that featured power hitting, strong individual performances from several Orioles prospects, a dominant shutout victory, and continued signs that Norfolk’s roster remains one of the most interesting groups in Triple-A baseball.
While the wins and losses have not always fallen Norfolk’s way this season, the organization’s primary objective at the Triple-A level remains player development. Every game provides an opportunity for Orioles prospects to improve, and the week from June 5 through June 11 offered several encouraging developments for players hoping to contribute in Baltimore later this season.
Tommy Pham provided veteran leadership and one of the biggest moments of the week with a grand slam. Creed Willems continued what has become a breakout season. Heston Kjerstad flashed signs of improvement. José Barrero supplied power from the middle of the lineup. Several pitchers delivered quality outings as the Tides battled both Gwinnett and Memphis.
The result was a week filled with memorable moments despite Norfolk’s continued climb in the International League standings.
Finishing the Gwinnett Series
Norfolk entered the final weekend of its road trip needing a strong finish against the Gwinnett Stripers.
The club had played competitive baseball throughout portions of the series but needed victories to leave Georgia with momentum. The Tides accomplished that goal by winning two of the final three games against Gwinnett, highlighted by a dominant shutout performance in Sunday’s finale.
June 5: Tides Edge Stripers 4-3
Friday’s game demonstrated the resilience Norfolk has shown throughout the season.
The Tides found themselves locked in a close contest throughout the evening. Neither club could create significant separation on the scoreboard, resulting in a tense battle that came down to late innings execution.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand delivered one of the game’s biggest swings with a home run that energized the Norfolk dugout. Tommy Pham continued his productive week by reaching base repeatedly and creating opportunities for the offense.
The pitching staff deserves significant credit for Friday’s victory. Norfolk’s bullpen entered a pressure-filled situation late in the game and managed to preserve a narrow lead. Several Gwinnett hitters represented potential game-changing threats, but the Tides pitchers executed their pitches when it mattered most.
The defense also played an important role. A pair of key defensive plays prevented additional Gwinnett runs and helped secure the victory.
When the final out was recorded, Norfolk had earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory and positioned itself to potentially win the series over the weekend.
June 6: Power Surge Not Enough in 7-2 Loss
Saturday’s game served as a reminder that baseball can be frustrating.
The Tides actually hit three home runs and still lost by five runs.
Creed Willems continued his remarkable offensive season with another long ball. The young catcher has become one of the most consistent power threats in the Orioles organization and continues to raise his prospect profile with each passing week.
José Barrero also left the yard. The veteran infielder has provided Norfolk with quality offensive production throughout the season and once again showed the power that has helped him reach the major leagues in the past.
Luis Vázquez joined the home run parade as well.
Unfortunately for Norfolk, all three blasts came as solo home runs.
Gwinnett’s offense took advantage of several opportunities with runners on base and gradually built a lead that Norfolk could not overcome.
The loss prevented the Tides from clinching a series victory, but it also set up an intriguing rubber match on Sunday afternoon.
June 7: Norfolk Dominates Gwinnett 6-0
Sunday produced one of Norfolk’s most complete performances of the season.
Everything worked.
The offense delivered timely hits.
The pitching staff was dominant.
The defense played clean baseball.
Most importantly, the Tides secured a shutout victory and left Gwinnett with positive momentum.
The game’s defining moment occurred during the third inning.
Norfolk loaded the bases and brought Tommy Pham to the plate.
Pham responded by crushing a grand slam that instantly changed the game.
The veteran outfielder’s blast gave Norfolk a 4-0 lead and effectively knocked Gwinnett back on its heels. The dugout erupted as Pham rounded the bases, celebrating one of the team’s biggest offensive moments of the season.
The Tides continued adding insurance runs throughout the afternoon.
Heston Kjerstad delivered a key RBI single that extended the lead and provided another encouraging sign for the former first-round draft pick.
The pitching staff handled the rest.
Rather than relying on one dominant starter, Norfolk received contributions from six different pitchers.
Yaqui Rivera opened the game.
Kyle Nicolas followed.
Cameron Weston contributed quality innings.
Enoli Paredes continued his strong season.
Hans Crouse provided valuable outs.
Andrew Magno closed the door.
Together, they combined for a shutout that showcased the depth of Norfolk’s bullpen.
The victory allowed the Tides to leave Gwinnett with a split and a renewed sense of confidence.
Tommy Pham’s Impact
Much of the attention this week belonged to Tommy Pham.
The veteran outfielder continues to prove valuable both on and off the field.
Pham’s grand slam represented the most memorable moment of the week, but his influence extends far beyond a single swing.
Young players frequently mention the value of having experienced veterans in the clubhouse. Pham brings years of major-league experience and postseason appearances to a Norfolk roster filled with prospects still learning how to navigate professional baseball.
The production remains impressive as well.
Pham consistently works deep counts, reaches base at a strong rate, and provides quality at-bats that younger players can learn from.
His performance against Gwinnett demonstrated exactly why organizations value veterans at the Triple-A level.
Creed Willems Continues Breakout Season
Few players in the Orioles organization have improved their stock more this season than Creed Willems.
The young catcher continued his offensive surge during the week by adding another home run and several quality at-bats.
Willems entered professional baseball with questions surrounding his defensive development and offensive consistency.
Many of those concerns have begun disappearing.
The power is legitimate.
The approach has improved.
The confidence continues growing.
Every week seems to bring another notable performance from the catcher, and Orioles fans are beginning to take notice.
The organization has long sought long-term catching depth behind Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo.
Willems is making a strong argument that he belongs in those future conversations.
Heston Kjerstad Looking for Consistency
No Norfolk player generates more discussion than Heston Kjerstad.
The former first-round pick remains one of the organization’s most talented hitters, but consistency has been difficult to maintain.
This week featured both encouraging moments and familiar frustrations.
The RBI single during Sunday’s victory represented a positive sign.
His at-bats appeared more competitive.
The quality of contact improved.
The challenge moving forward will be sustaining those improvements over an extended period.
The Orioles know Kjerstad possesses major-league talent.
The focus now becomes finding the consistency necessary to earn another opportunity in Baltimore.
José Barrero’s Quietly Strong Season
While several prospects receive most of the attention, José Barrero continues producing.
The infielder added another home run this week and remains one of Norfolk’s most dependable offensive contributors.
Barrero provides positional versatility, defensive reliability, and power potential.
Those skills make him valuable at the Triple-A level and potentially useful as depth for Baltimore if injuries create opportunities later in the season.
Looking Ahead
The Tides returned home following the Gwinnett series and immediately faced another challenge in the Memphis Redbirds.
Memphis entered the series as one of the stronger clubs in the International League.
The matchup offered Norfolk another opportunity to measure itself against quality competition while continuing player development.
Although the season has featured more losses than victories, the future remains bright for several players currently wearing Norfolk uniforms.
Tommy Pham continues providing leadership.
Creed Willems keeps emerging as a legitimate prospect.
Heston Kjerstad searches for consistency.
José Barrero continues producing.
Several young pitchers are gaining valuable experience.
For Orioles fans, those developments matter far more than Triple-A standings.
The biggest victories often occur long before players reach Baltimore.
This week provided another reminder that Norfolk remains an important part of the Orioles’ long-term success.
